Abstract
Devices, systems and methods for controlling a patient's body temperature by endovascular heat exchange.
Claims20
A system configured to circulate a thermal exchange fluid to exchange heat with a patient, the system comprising:
- a control console including a warming or cooling device and a controller;
- a first heat exchanger configured exchange heat with the warming or cooling device through the thermal exchange fluid flowing through the first heat exchanger, the first heat exchanger including inflow and outflow connectors;
- a second heat exchanger configured to be thermally coupled to the patient such that the thermal exchange fluid circulating through the second heat exchanger exchanges heat with the patient;
- and
- a pump configured to circulate the thermal exchange fluid between the first and second heat exchangers,
- wherein the controller is configured to transition the system between an operation mode in which the pump circulates the thermal exchange fluid in a first direction between the first and second heat exchangers to provide temperature management therapy to the patient, and a purge mode in which the pump circulates the thermal exchange fluid in a second direction, while the outflow connector of the first heat exchanger is in a closed position, in order to remove the thermal exchange fluid from the first heat exchanger.

A system configured to circulate a thermal exchange fluid to exchange heat with a patient, the system comprising:
- a control console including a warming or cooling device;
- a first heat exchanger configured to exchange heat with the warming or cooling device through the thermal exchange fluid flowing through the first heat exchanger, the first heat exchanger including a check valve;
- a second heat exchanger configured to be thermally associated with the patient such that the thermal exchange fluid circulating through the second heat exchanger exchanges heat with the patient;
- and
- a pump configured to circulate the thermal exchange fluid between the first and second heat exchangers to provide temperature management therapy to the patient,
- wherein the pump is configured to remove the thermal exchange fluid from the first heat exchanger, while flow of the thermal exchange fluid into the first heat exchanger is inhibited by the check valve.
