Abstract
A method of identifying a residue-component in a residue on a surface includes using molecular probes. The molecular probes may be antibodies, affimers, aptamers, lectins, carbohydrate binding modules and mixtures thereof. The residue-component may be a soil or surface treatment component. The method can be used to make or improve cleaning or treatment compositions or processes.

A method of identifying a residue and/or residue-component in a residue on a surface, comprising:
- (i) in a first step, contacting the residue with at least five molecular probes wherein:
- a. a first molecular probe of a probe class selected from the group comprising antibodies, affimers, aptamers, lectins, and carbohydrate binding modules;
- and
- b. wherein a second molecular probe and/or a third molecular probe are each of a probe class selected from the group comprising antibodies, affimers, aptamers, lectins, and carbohydrate binding modules, with the proviso that the class of the second and third molecular probes are different from the probe class of the first molecular probe, wherein the second and third classes being the same as or different from one another, and mixtures thereof;
- (ii) in a second step, detecting a positive response from one or more probes, the collective response from said at least five molecular probes providing information regarding the identity, and optionally quantity, of the residue and/or residue-component in the residue.
A method of making a cleaning composition comprising:
- (i) in a first step, contacting a residue and/or residue component in a residue on a surface with at least five molecular probes, wherein:
- a. the first molecular probe of a probe class selected from the group comprising antibodies, affimers, aptamers, lectins, carbohydrate binding modules, and
- b. a second and/or a third molecular probes is selected from the group comprising antibodies, affimers, aptamers, lectins, and carbohydrate binding modules, with the proviso that the class of the second and third molecular probes are different from the probe class of the first molecular probe, wherein the second and third classes being the same as or different from one another, and mixtures thereof;
- (ii) in a second step, detecting a positive response from one or more probes, the collective response from said at least five molecular probes providing information regarding the identity of the residue and/or residue-component in the residue, to provide an identified residue and/or identified residue-component;
- and
- (iii) selecting a first cleaning component capable of promoting removal of the identified residue and/or identified residue-component;
- and
- (iv) mixing the first cleaning component with a cleaning adjunct to form a cleaning composition.
