Abstract
Disclosed is a method and system for performing a procedure. The system may include a navigation system and/or a surgical robot to be used to at least assist in the procedure. The system may assist in delineating objects and/or determining physical characteristics of subject portions. The system may assist in performing and/or a workflow of the procedure.
Claims20
A system having a navigation system for performing a procedure on a subject, comprising:
- an instrument configured to interact with the subject;
- a tracking device configured to be tracked and connected to the instrument;
- a tracking system configured to track the tracking device;
- a display device configured to display at least an image of the subject;
- a processor system configured to execute instructions to:
- recall a working volume within which a working end of the instrument is selected to travel;
- recall a non-working volume within which the working end of the instrument is not to travel;
- determine a position of the working end relative to at least one of the working volume or the non-working volume by tracking the tracking device with the tracking system;
- and
- output to the display device at least one of (i) a first indication to a user of the determined position of the working end relative to at least one of the working volume or the non-working volume or (ii) a second indication to the user of the determined position of the working end relative to at least one of the working volume or the non-working volume;
- wherein the first indication and the second indication are at a single indication position on the display device and the indication position changes from the first indication to the second indication based on a detected transition of the working end, as tracked by the tracking system, between the working volume and the non-working volume, and
- wherein the display device is configured to render a graphical indicator at the single indication position, the graphical indicator having a first appearance when the working end is in the working volume and a second, visually distinct appearance when the working end is in the non-working volume.

A system comprising:
- an instrument configured to interact with a subject;
- a tracking device configured to be tracked and connected to the instrument;
- a tracking system configured to track the tracking device;
- a display device configured to display at least an image of the subject;
- one or more memory circuits configured to store data defining a working volume within which a working end of the instrument is selected to travel and a non-working volume within which the working end of the instrument is not to travel;
- processing circuitry operatively coupled to the one or more memory circuits, the processing circuitry configured to:
- determine a position of the working end relative to at least one of the working volume or the non-working volume by tracking the tracking device with the tracking system;
- and
- output to the display device at a single indication position at least one of (i) a first indication to a user of the determined position of the working end relative to at least one of the working volume or the non-working volume or (ii) a second indication to the user of the determined position of the working end relative to at least one of the working volume or the non-working volume;
- wherein the first indication and the second indication are at the single indication position on the display device and the indication position changes from the first indication to the second indication based on a detected transition of the working end, as tracked by the tracking system, between the working volume and the non-working volume, and
- wherein the display device is configured to render a graphical indicator at the single indication position, the graphical indicator having a first appearance when the working end is in the working volume and a second, visually distinct appearance when the working end is in the non-working volume.

A system comprising:
- an instrument configured to interact with a subject;
- a tracking device configured to be tracked and connected to the instrument;
- a tracking system configured to track the tracking device;
- a display device configured to display at least an image of the subject;
- one or more memory circuits configured to store data defining a working volume within which a working end of the instrument is selected to travel and a non-working volume within which the working end of the instrument is not to travel;
- processing circuitry coupled to the one or more memory circuits, the processing circuitry configured to:
- determine a position of the working end relative to at least one of the working volume or the non-working volume by tracking the tracking device with the tracking system;
- and
- provide to a user a visual indication, the visual indication being based on whether the working end is within the working volume or the non-working volume, and the visual indication changing in response to a detected transition of the working end, as tracked by the tracking system, between the working volume and the non-working volume, wherein the visual indication comprises a graphical indicator rendered at a predetermined location on the display device, the graphical indicator having a first appearance when the working end is in the working volume and a second, visually distinct appearance when the working end is in the non-working volume.
