Abstract
Described herein is a coating composition suitable for application to a panel. The coating composition exhibits stability upon exposure to high temperatures. The coating composition comprises calcium carbonate; titanium dioxide; opacity pigment composite comprising TiO2 encapsulated within a precipitated calcium carbonate shell; calcined diatomaceous earth; aluminum hydroxide; and vinyl acrylic polymer. Described herein are also building panels coated with the coating composition and methods of their formation.

A coating composition comprising:
- calcium carbonate;
- titanium dioxide;
- opacity pigment composite comprising TiO2 encapsulated within a precipitated calcium carbonate shell;
- calcined diatomaceous earth;
- aluminum hydroxide;
- and
- vinyl acrylic polymer;
- wherein a weight ratio of calcined diatomaceous earth to vinyl acrylic polymer is from about 0.5:1 to about 5:1;
- and
- wherein the coating composition sustains a stable viscosity after heating to a temperature of at least about 130° F. for at least about 72 hours.
A coating composition comprising:
- calcium carbonate present in an amount from about 20 wt. % to about 40 wt. % based on the dry weight of the composition;
- titanium dioxide present in an amount from about 10 wt. % to about 40 wt. % based on the dry weight of the composition;
- opacity pigment composite comprising TiO2 encapsulated within a precipitated calcium carbonate shell present in an amount from about 8 wt. % to about 30 wt. % based on the dry weight of the composition;
- calcined diatomaceous earth present in an amount from about 3 wt. % to about 20 wt. % based on the dry weight of the composition;
- aluminum hydroxide present in an amount from about 3 wt. % to about 20 wt. % based on the dry weight of the composition;
- and
- vinyl acrylic polymer present in an amount from about 2 wt. % to about 20 wt. % based on the dry weight of the composition;
- wherein the vinyl acrylic polymer has a pH below 7.0;
- and
- wherein the coating composition sustained a stable viscosity after heating to a temperature of at least about 130° F. for at least about 72 hours.
