Power tool and a transmission therefor

A power tool comprising:

• a motor having a drive shaft;
• an output shaft operatively coupled to a tool holder, the output shaft having an axial bore formed therein;
• a transmission that operatively couples the drive shaft of the motor to the output shaft, the transmission including:
• at least a first gear and a second gear configured to transmit torque from the motor to the tool holder;
• and
• a gear selection key moveable between a first position and a second position within the bore and configured to engage the first gear to the output shaft in the first position such that the torque is transmitted from the motor to the tool holder via the first gear and configured to engage the second gear to the output shaft in the second position such that the torque is transmitted from the motor to the tool holder via the second gear;
• wherein the transmission defines a synchronization pocket that receives the gear selection key such that the gear selection key cannot simultaneously engage the first gear and the second gear to the output shaft.

A power tool comprising:

• a motor having a drive shaft;
• an output shaft operatively coupled to a tool holder;
• a gear sleeve attached to the output shaft in a fixed position, the gear sleeve having a bore that extends therethrough;
• and
• a transmission that operatively couples the drive shaft of the motor to the output shaft, the transmission including:
• at least a first gear and a second gear configured to transmit torque from the motor to the tool holder;
• and
• a gear selection key moveable between a first position and a second position and configured to engage the first gear to the output shaft in the first position such that the torque is transmitted from the motor to the tool holder via the first gear and configured to engage the second gear to the output shaft in the second position such that the torque is transmitted from the motor to the tool holder via the second gear,
• wherein the first gear and the second gear are rotatably mounted on the gear sleeve, and
• wherein the gear selection key is mounted on a moveable gear selection rod that is disposed in the bore of the gear sleeve.
