Abstract
A protection device that provides improved protection against damage to the underlying product. The protection device includes silk impact pillows that absorb energy from low or high impacts. The present disclosure provides the ability to adjust a plurality of attributes: 1) pillow stiffness, 2) cocoon density; and 3) cocoon height, to construct a pillow of a desired impact resistance.
Claims20
A protection device comprising:
- a pillow having a top layer and a bottom layer with a circumscribing seal formed between the top and bottom layers to define an internal volume within the pillow,
- the pillow having a curvilinear shape, with the top layer having a first radius of curvature and the bottom layer having a second radius of curvature and a spacing between the top layer of the pillow and bottom layer of the pillow, the spacing between the top layer of the pillow and bottom layer of the pillow being non-uniform between the circumscribing seal of the pillow;
- at least one partial cocoon formed from silk from a silkworm sealably disposed within the internal volume of the pillow,
- the partial cocoon having a dome shape with a closed apex at a first end and a cylindrical opening at a second end, and
- with the closed apex contacting the top layer and the cylindrical opening contacting the bottom layer of the pillow.

A protection device comprising:
- a pillow, the pillow having
- a top layer having a first outwardly projecting lip which circumscribes the top layer;
- a bottom layer having a second outwardly projecting lip which circumscribes the bottom layer;
- a seal formed between the first lip and second lip to define an internal volume within the pillow;
- and
- a plurality of partial cocoons formed from silk from a silkworm disposed within the internal volume of the pillow, each partial cocoon having a dome shape with a closed apex at a first end and a cylindrical opening at a second end,
- at least one closed apex contacting the top layer of the pillow and at least one cylindrical opening contacting the bottom layer of the pillow, each partial cocoon abutting at least an adjacent partial cocoon;
- at least one strengthening feature disposed on at least one of the top layer or bottom layer of the pillow, wherein the at least one strengthening feature is a raised feature that extends a constant height from the top layer or the bottom layer.

A protection device comprising:
- a plurality of pillows, each pillow having
- a top layer having a first end and a second end, defining a first sidewall therebetween;
- a bottom layer having a first end and a second end, defining a second sidewall therebetween;
- a circumscribing seal formed between the first sidewall and the second sidewall along an edge of the pillow and defining an internal volume within each pillow;
- and
- a plurality of partial cocoons formed from silk from a silkworm sealably disposed within the internal volume of each pillow, each partial cocoon having a dome shape with a closed apex at a first end and a cylindrical opening at a second end, with the closed apex contacting the top layer of the pillow and the cylindrical opening contacting the bottom layer of the pillow;
- wherein each partial cocoon abuts an adjacent partial cocoon,
- wherein a first pillow is disposed at a first location and a second pillow is disposed at a second location, each pillow is configured to abut at least one adjacent pillow along the edge and at least partially encapsulate an object.
