Abstract
Example implementations relate to storing data in a storage system. An example includes receiving, by a storage controller of a storage system, a data unit to be stored in persistent storage of the storage system. The storage controller calculates multiple entropy values for the data unit. The storage controller selects, based on the multiple entropy values, at least one reduction operation from multiple different reduction operations. The storage controller performs the selected at least one reduction operation on the received data unit.
Claims20
A storage system comprising:
- a processor;
- and
- a machine-readable storage storing instructions, the instructions executable by the processor to:
- receive a data unit to be stored in a persistent storage of the storage system;
- calculate a plurality of entropy values for the received data unit, wherein each entropy value of the plurality of entropy values indicates a different entropy characteristic of an entirety of the received data unit, and wherein each entropy value of the plurality of entropy values is calculated using a different type of entropy calculation;
- select, based on the plurality of entropy values, at least one reduction operation from a plurality of different reduction operations;
- and
- perform the selected at least one reduction operation on the received data unit.
A non-transitory machine-readable medium storing instructions that upon execution cause a processor to:
- receive a data unit to be stored in a persistent storage of a storage system;
- calculate a plurality of entropy values for the received data unit, wherein each entropy value of the plurality of entropy values indicates a different entropy characteristic of an entirety of the received data unit, and wherein each entropy value of the plurality of entropy values is calculated using a different type of entropy calculation;
- select, based on the plurality of entropy values, at least one reduction operation from a plurality of different reduction operations;
- and
- perform the selected at least one reduction operation on the received data unit.
A method comprising:
- receiving, by a storage controller of a storage system, a data unit to be stored in a persistent storage of the storage system;
- calculating, by the storage controller, a plurality of entropy values for the received data unit, wherein each entropy value of the plurality of entropy values indicates a different entropy characteristic of an entirety of the received data unit, and wherein each entropy value of the plurality of entropy values is calculated using a different type of entropy calculation;
- selecting, by the storage controller based on the plurality of entropy values, at least one reduction operation from a plurality of different reduction operations;
- and
- performing, by the storage controller, the selected at least one reduction operation on the received data unit.
