An elevator system includes at least two elevator cars adapted to travel in respective separate hoistways of the same building. The at least two elevator cars have at least two different rated speeds including lowest rated speed and a rated speed higher than the lowest rated speed. At least each elevator car with the rated speed higher than the lowest rated speed is provided with an electronic overspeed monitoring equipment configured to stop the movement of the elevator car, if the speed of the elevator car meets an overspeed threshold. The overspeed threshold is decreasing towards at least one end terminal of the hoistway. Each separate hoistway of the building has a bottom end terminal space with a substantially equal height and/or a top end terminal space with a substantially equal height.
