Abstract
A core needle biopsy device includes a body, a needle assembly and a drive assembly. The needle assembly extends distally from the body and includes a hollow piercer and a hollow cutter. The piercer is disposed within the cutter. The cutter includes a distal tip and a swaged portion proximate the distal tip. The drive assembly is configured to selectively cock and fire the piercer and the cutter.
Claims20
A core needle biopsy device, comprising:
- (a) a body;
- (b) a needle assembly extending distally from the body and including a piercer and a hollow cutter, the piercer being disposed within the hollow cutter, the cutter defining a cutting edge, the piercer defining a sharp distal tip configured to penetrate tissue;
- (c) a drive assembly including a cutter drive and a piercer drive, the cutter drive including a first manipulator, the piercer drive including a second manipulator;
- and
- (d) a motor driven mechanism in communication with the drive assembly to control movement of the cutter drive and the piercer drive, the motor drive mechanism being configured to drive the first manipulator to compress a cutter spring while moving the cutter into a cocked position, the motor driven mechanism being further configured to drive the second manipulator to compress a piercer firing spring while moving the piercer into a cocked position, the drive assembly being configured to move the cutter and the piercer independently of each other.
2 more elements
A core needle biopsy device, comprising:
- (a) a body;
- (b) a cutter extending from the body, the cutter including an open distal end defined by a sharp edge;
- (c) a piercer disposed within the cutter, the piercer defining a notch, the piercer being movable relative to the cutter to sever a tissue sample into the notch via the sharp edge;
- and
- (d) a drive assembly, including:
- (i) a cutter drive assembly having a cutter manipulator, a cutter spring, and a cutter driver extending from the cutter manipulator, the cutter manipulator being translatable by the cutter spring to fire the cutter,
- (ii) a piercer drive assembly having a piercer manipulator, a piercer spring, and a piercer driver, the piercer manipulator being translatable by the piercer spring to fire the piercer, the piercer spring being disposed within a hollow interior of the piercer manipulator, and
- (iii) an actuation mechanism, the actuation mechanism being configured to selectively engage the cutter driver and the piercer driver to sequentially release axial translation of the cutter and the piercer relative to the body.

A core needle biopsy device, comprising:
- (a) a body;
- (b) a cutter extending from the body, the cutter including an open distal end defined by a sharp edge;
- (c) a piercer disposed within the cutter, the piercer defining a notch, the piercer being movable relative to the cutter to sever a tissue sample into the notch via the sharp edge;
- and
- (d) a drive assembly, including:
- (i) a cutter drive assembly having a cutter manipulator, a cutter driver, and a cutter firing spring, the cutter driver extending from the cutter manipulator, the cutter firing spring being coaxial with at least a portion of the cutter manipulator,
- (ii) a piercer drive assembly having a piercer manipulator, a piercer driver, and a piercer firing spring, at least a portion of the piercer driver extending from the piercer manipulator, the piercer firing spring being disposed within a hollow interior of the piercer manipulator,
- (iii) a cocking assembly, the cocking assembly including a motor driven mechanism, the motor driven mechanism being in communication with the cutter manipulator and the piercer manipulator to translate both the cutter manipulator and the piercer manipulator within the body and compress both the cutter firing spring and the piercer firing spring, and
- (iv) a release assembly, the release assembly being configured to selectively engage the cutter drive assembly and the piercer drive assembly to sequentially release axial translation of the cutter and the piercer relative to the body via the cutter firing spring and the piercer firing spring, respectively.
