A computer-implemented method, comprising:
- providing a host computer having an input output virtualization driver, and a host memory, wherein the input output virtualization driver includes a process and memory manager (PMM);
- emulating an input output virtualization device on the host computer;
- allocating a portion of the host memory during a boot phase for exclusive use by the emulated input output virtualization device;
- formatting the portion of host memory for use by the emulated input output virtualization device;
- determining whether the memory consumption of the host computer is below a critical level;
- reclaiming the portion of the host memory allocated to the emulated input output virtualization device;
- and
- allocating the reclaimed host memory to the host computer.
