Abstract
A light emitting display can be formed from tiles mounted within a certain distance range with respect to each other and with an established blending region positioned towards the edges of the tiles. A tile can be a matrix of light emitting elements, such as LEDs, OLEDs, quantum dots, or other element that emits light. The tolerance of spacing between tiles can allow for less precision in alignment during installation in a theatre, thereby reducing display assembly cost but still maintaining a display for displaying an image at a high quality with reduced or eliminated appearance of visual artifacts between tiles.
Claims22
A light emitting display configured to reduce a viewer's visual perception of a gap width between tiles of the light emitting display, comprising:
- a first tile misaligned with a second tile,
- the first tile comprising a first edge having a first edge profile of a first edge region that includes a first edge protrusion;
- the second tile comprising a second edge adjacent to the first edge, the second edge having a second edge profile of a second edge region that includes a second edge protrusion that is complementary to the first edge protrusion;
- and
- a transition formed by a portion of each of the first edge protrusion and the second edge protrusion,
- wherein the first edge profile and the second edge profile are configured to break up the gap width into segments within the transition,
- wherein a distance between centers of adjacent light emitting elements is the same or less than a threshold distance that is a minimum visual acuity determined by an observer's distance from the light emitting display,
- wherein a horizontal alignment between the first edge and the second edge is based on a first-edge emitter element and a second-edge emitter element that is adjacent to the first-edge emitter element, the first-edge emitter element and the second-edge emitter element being positioned at a maximum allowable pitch that is a distance between centers of the first-edge emitter element and the second-edge emitter element, and
- wherein a vertical alignment between the first edge and the second edge is based on a third-edge emitter element and a fourth-edge emitter element that are positioned at a minimum allowable pitch.
A method comprising:
- forming a transition by a portion of each of a first edge protrusion and a second edge protrusion that is complementary to the first edge protrusion, the first edge protrusion being part of a first edge region for a first edge of a first tile that is misaligned with a second tile for a light emitting display, the second edge protrusion being part of a second edge region for a second edge of the second tile, wherein the first edge has a first edge profile of the first edge region, wherein the second edge has a second edge profile of the second edge region, wherein the second edge is adjacent to the first edge;
- and
- breaking up a gap between the first tile and the second tile into segments within the transition to reduce a viewer's visual perception of the gap,
- wherein a distance between centers of adjacent light emitting elements is the same or less than a threshold distance that is a minimum visual acuity determined by an observer's distance from the light emitting display,
- wherein a horizontal alignment between the first edge and the second edge is based on a first-edge emitter element and a second-edge emitter element that is adjacent to the first-edge emitter element, the first-edge emitter element and the second-edge emitter element being positioned at a maximum allowable pitch that is a distance between centers of the first-edge emitter element and the second-edge emitter element, and
- wherein a vertical alignment between the first edge and the second edge is based on a third-edge emitter element and a fourth-edge emitter element that are positioned at a minimum allowable pitch.
