Enriching metrics with application execution context

One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer program instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform a computer-implemented method for monitoring a computer system and storing metrics for generating responses to queries about the computer system, the computer-implemented method comprising:

• receiving from a software agent of the computer system:
• (1) a first group of information that includes first data and first metadata, the first data including a first value of a metric of a monitored software component of the computer system, and the first value being measured during execution of an application in the computer system, and (2) a second group of information separate from the first group, that includes second metadata identifying execution relationships between the monitored software component and other software components of the computer system;
• populating a tree data structure in memory or storage of the computer system to store the first data and the first and second metadata, wherein the tree data structure includes a plurality of nodes that each corresponds to one of a plurality of software components of the computer system, each of the nodes being linked to at least one of the other nodes according to execution relationships between the plurality of software components;
• updating the tree data structure in the memory or storage to store third metadata that adds execution context for the plurality of software components;
• generating an updated dataset by traversing the nodes according to the links between the nodes and then persisting the updated dataset in a database table stored in a storage device of the computer system, wherein the persisted database table includes a plurality of records, one of the records including the first data and the first, second, and third metadata;
• in response to a query from a user computer for performance information of the computer system, locating in the persisted database table, records corresponding to a value specified for the third metadata by the query;
• and
• generating a result based on the located records and then transmitting the result to the user computer.

A computer system including at least one processor and memory coupled to the at least one processor, the memory being loaded with computer program instructions that, when executed on the at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to carry out a computer-implemented method for monitoring the computer system and storing metrics for generating responses to queries about the computer system, the computer-implemented method comprising:

• receiving from a software agent of the computer system:
• (1) a first group of information that includes first data and first metadata, the first data including a first value of a metric of a monitored software component of the computer system, and the first value being measured during execution of an application in the computer system, and (2) a second group of information separate from the first group, that includes second metadata identifying execution relationships between the monitored software component and other software components of the computer system;
• populating a tree data structure in memory or storage of the computer system to store the first data and the first and second metadata, wherein the tree data structure includes containing a plurality of nodes that each corresponds to one of a plurality of software components of the computer system, each of the nodes being linked to at least one of the other nodes according to execution relationships between the plurality of software components;
• updating the tree data structure in the memory or storage to store third metadata that adds execution context for the plurality of software components;
• generating an updated dataset by traversing the nodes according to the links between the nodes and then persisting the updated dataset in a database table stored in a storage device of the computer system, wherein the persisted database table includes a plurality of records, one of the records including the first data and the first, second, and third metadata;
• in response to a query from a user computer for performance information of the computer system, locating in the persisted database table, records corresponding to a value specified for the third metadata by the query;
• and
• generating a result based on the located records and then transmitting the result to the user computer.
