Abstract
The present specification provides a detector for an X-ray imaging system. The detector includes at least one high resolution layer having high resolution wavelength-shifting optical fibers, each fiber occupying a distinct region of the detector, at least one low resolution layer with low resolution regions, and a single segmented multi-channel photo-multiplier tube for coupling signals obtained from the high resolution fibers and the low resolution regions.
Claims20
A detector configured to detect X-ray radiation, wherein the detector is at least partially within a housing and comprises:
- a first amount of scintillator positioned in the housing;
- a first layer comprising a first fiber positioned in, and extending through, the first layer, wherein the first fiber is optically coupled to the first amount of scintillator and configured to receive first light rays having a first wavelength range from the first amount of scintillator and shift the first wavelength range of the received first light rays to generate first wavelength shifted light rays indicative of an amount of the X-ray radiation having a first energy value;
- a second amount of scintillator positioned in the housing;
- a second layer comprising a second fiber positioned in, and extending through, the second layer, wherein the second fiber is optically coupled to the second amount of scintillator and configured to receive second light rays having a second wavelength range from the second amount of scintillator and shift the second wavelength range of the second light rays to generate second wavelength shifted light rays indicative of an amount of X-ray radiation having a second energy value, wherein the second energy value is greater than the first energy value;
- a third amount of scintillator positioned between the first amount of scintillator and the second amount of scintillator, wherein the third amount of scintillator is configured as an absorbing layer wherein the absorbing layer is adapted to enhance discrimination between the X-ray radiation having the first energy value and the X-ray radiation having the second energy value and wherein the third amount of scintillator is adapted to emit light rays indicative of an amount of radiation having a third energy value different from the first energy value and the second energy value;
- a first photodetector configured to be optically coupled to the first fiber in order to receive and detect the first wavelength shifted light rays;
- and
- a second photodetector configured to be optically coupled to the second fiber in order to receive and detect the second wavelength shifted light rays.
