Variable speed pumping system and method

A variable speed pumping system coupled to a circulation system of an aquatic application, comprising:

• a pump including an onboard controller with a main circuit board, the onboard controller coupled to a variable speed drive;
• an electrical communication assembly including an IO expansion module and in communication with the onboard controller;
• a remote user device communicatively coupled to the onboard controller;
• an automation device communicatively coupled to the onboard controller via the IO expansion module;
• and
• a pool pad device including a sensor configured to provide sensed data, the pool pad device communicatively coupled to the onboard controller,
• wherein the onboard controller is configured to receive the sensed data, transmit the sensed data to the remote user device, and transmit instructions to control the pool pad device in response to the sensed data, and
• wherein the automation device is configured to transmit instructions to the onboard controller, and is not configured to provide pass-through control of the pool pad device.

A variable speed pumping system coupled to a pool circulation system, comprising:

• a pump including an onboard controller, the onboard controller coupled to a variable speed drive;
• an automation device communicatively coupled to the onboard controller;
• a remote user device communicatively coupled to the onboard controller;
• a plurality of pool pad devices communicatively coupled to the onboard controller;
• and
• an external sensor configured to provide sensed data,
• wherein the onboard controller is configured to receive the sensed data, transmit instructions to control each of the plurality of pool pad devices in response to the sensed data, and modify one or more of a flow rate, speed, or operation time of the pump in response to the sensed data, and
• wherein the automation device is configured to transmit instructions to the onboard controller to modify an operation of the pump.
