Abstract
A pyrolysis method and system are provided that utilizes a hydrogen gas or steam in order to enhance the pyrolysis oils produced from recycled plastic wastes. More particularly, the disclosed pyrolysis method and system may be configured to co-feed a hydrogen gas or steam and various types of waste plastics, including post-customer and post-industrial wastes, into a pyrolysis unit and thereby produce desirable pyrolysis oils.
Claims5
A method of making an olefin-containing effluent stream, said method comprising:
- (a) introducing a pyrolysis feed and hydrogen into a pyrolysis unit in presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, wherein said pyrolysis feed comprises recycled post-consumer plastic waste, wherein said waste is chosen from high density polyethyelene, low density polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC), polyethylene terephthalate, polyamides, poly(methyl methacrylate), polytetrafluoroethylene, or combinations thereof, and wherein said waste contains no more than 5 weight percent of polyvinyl chloride and/or polyethylene terephthalate;
- and
- (b) pyrolyzing at a temperature from 775° C. to about 1,100° C. at least a portion of said pyrolysis feed to thereby form a pyrolysis effluent comprising a pyrolysis oil, wherein said pyrolysis oil
- (i) comprises an aromatic content of less than 8 weight percent;
- (ii) comprises an alkane content of at least 50 weight percent;
- and
- (iii) exhibits a density at 15° C. of less than 0.8 g/cm3;
- wherein said pyrolysis oil, which after separation into a light pyrolysis oil fraction and a heavy pyrolysis oil fraction, the heavy pyrolysis oil fraction has a C8+ content of at least 15 weight percent, based on the total weight of said pyrolysis oil followed by
- (c) feeding a combined stream cracker feedstock comprising
- (1) at least 1 weight percent and not more than 30 weight percent, based on the total weight of the combined steam cracker feedstock, of said pyrolysis oil and
- (2) at least 55 weight percent and not more than 99 weight percent, based on the total weight of the combined steam cracker feedstock, of a non-recycle hydrocarbon feed wherein said hydrocarbon feed is predominantly propane,
- to a steam cracker to thereby afford an olefin-containing effluent stream.
