Abstract
A composite material includes a base material and polydopamine adhered to the base material, the polydopamine containing hydroxy groups. At least one hydrogen atom of the hydroxy groups is substituted with an acyl group.

A composite material comprising:
- a base material;
- and
- polydopamine adhered to the base material, the polydopamine comprising hydroxy groups, wherein
- at least one hydrogen atom of the hydroxy groups is substituted with an acyl group and at least one other hydrogen atom of the hydroxy groups remains unsubstituted.

A method for producing a composite material, the method comprising:
- contacting an acylating agent with a material comprising polydopamine that comprises hydroxy groups;
- and
- acylating at least some of the hydroxy groups such that at least one other hydroxy group remains unsubstituted, wherein
- the material comprises a base material and the polydopamine, and
- the polydopamine is adhered to a surface of the base material.
