Abstract
A networking system may perform border gateway protocol (BGP) switchover. In particular, the networking system may execute an active BGP process based on a set of received input states and execute a standby BGP process based on the set of received input states independently of the execution of the active BGP process based on the set of received input states.
Claims20
A method for border gateway protocol (BGP) switchover, the method comprising:
- receiving, by an active BGP process, a set of input states;
- executing the active BGP process based on the set of input states;
- receiving, by a standby BGP process, the set of input states;
- and
- executing the standby BGP process based on the set of input states independently of executing the active BGP process based on the set of input states.
Non-transitory computer-readable storage media comprising computer-executable instructions that, when executed by one or more processors for a networking system, cause the one or more processors to:
- receive, by a standby border gateway protocol (BGP) process, routing information advertised by one or more BGP peer network devices from an active BGP process;
- perform, by the standby BGP process, BGP route selection based on the routing information advertised by the one or more BGP peer network devices to identify a first BGP route for a destination stored at a local routing information base (RIB) for the standby BGP process, wherein the first BGP route differs from a second BGP route for the destination identified by the active BGP process and advertised by the active BGP process to at least some of the one or more BGP peer network devices, wherein the BGP route selection is performed by the standby BGP process to identify the first BGP route during a time period prior to an initiation of a BGP switchover that promotes the standby BGP process to a new active BGP process, and wherein the second BGP route is identified by the active BGP process during the time period prior to the initiation of the BGP switchover;
- and
- send, after the initiation of the BGP switchover, a BGP update message indicating the first BGP route for the destination.
A method of executing a standby border gateway protocol (BGP) process configured to replace an active BGP process in response to a failure event, the method comprising:
- receiving, by the standby BGP process, routing information as received from one or more BGP peer network devices by the active BGP process;
- executing the standby BGP process based on the received routing information to identify standby routes for advertisement, wherein the standby routes for advertisement differ from active routes for advertisement identified by the active BGP process and advertised, prior to the failure event, to at least some of the one or more BGP peer network devices;
- and
- reconciling a difference between the standby routes for advertisement and the active routes for advertisement after the failure event.
