Device and method for redacting an image

An electronic computing device, comprising:

• a communications interface;
• a memory configured to store a predefined redaction rule specifying a distance criterion for redaction;
• and
• an electronic processor communicatively coupled to the communications interface and the memory, the electronic processor configured to:
• receive, via the communications interface, an image captured by a camera corresponding to a field of view of the camera, the image containing a plurality of pixels and each pixel in the plurality of pixels capturing a respective region in a plurality of regions of the field of view of the camera;
• measure, at the electronic computing device, multiple distances from the camera to the plurality of regions of the field of view of the camera, wherein measuring the multiple distance comprises measuring a respective distance from the camera to each respective region captured by each and every pixel in the plurality of pixels;
• in response to determining that a first distance of the multiple distances measured from the camera to a first respective region captured in a first pixel of the plurality of pixels satisfies the distance criterion, redact the first pixel contained in the image;
• and
• in response to determining that a second distance of the multiple distances measured from the camera to a second respective region captured in a second pixel of the plurality of pixels does not satisfy the distance criterion, refrain from redacting the second pixel contained in the image.
