Abstract
An air stable solid garnet composition, comprising: a bulk composition and a surface protonated composition on at least a portion of the bulk composition as defined herein, and the protonated surface composition is present on at least a portion of the exterior surface of the bulk composition at a thickness of from 0.1 to 10,000 nm. Also disclosed is a composite electrolyte structure, and methods of making and using the composition and the composite electrolyte structure.
Claims20
A solid garnet electrolyte membrane, comprising:
- a bulk composition comprising a first lithium garnet chosen from Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) and doped LLZO compositions;
- and
- a surface composition comprising a second garnet on at least a portion of an exterior surface of the solid garnet electrolyte membrane,
- wherein the second garnet of at least a portion of the exterior surface of the solid garnet electrolyte membrane comprises a layer having a thickness from 0.1 nm to no more than 10,000 nm, the second garnet is a protonated garnet, and an interior of the solid garnet electrolyte membrane extending between opposite faces of the solid garnet electrolyte membrane comprising the bulk composition.
A solid garnet electrolyte membrane, comprising:
- a bulk composition comprising a first lithium garnet chosen from doped LLZO compositions;
- and
- a surface composition comprising a passivated garnet of at least a portion of an exterior surface of the first lithium garnet in a bulk of the solid garnet electrolyte membrane, wherein the surface composition comprises a lithium-deficient surface,
- wherein the passivated garnet on at least a portion of the exterior surface of the first lithium garnet comprises a layer having a thickness from 0.1 nm to no more than 10,000 nm, and an interior of the solid electrolyte membrane extending between opposite faces of the solid garnet electrolyte membrane comprises the bulk composition.
A solid garnet electrolyte membrane, comprising:
- a first lithium garnet chosen from Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) and doped LLZO compositions;
- and
- a second passivated garnet of an exterior surface of the solid garnet electrolyte membrane, wherein the second passivated garnet is lithium-deficient, the second passivated garnet is a protonated garnet, the first lithium garnet is within a bulk of the solid garnet electrolyte membrane extending between opposite faces of the solid garnet electrolyte membrane, and the solid garnet electrolyte membrane comprises sintered particles.
