Abstract
Systems and methods for verifying proper possession of a medication are disclosed. A reader device scans a code printed on the medication to extract an embedded serial number. The reader device captures biometric information of a person in possession of the medication. A first server queries a prescription database, which retrieves biometric characteristic data associated with the embedded serial number. A determination is made if the retrieved biometric characteristic data matches biometric characteristic data. The match information is displayed on the reader device.
Claims20
A system for verifying legitimate possession of a medication comprising:
- a code printed on the medication comprising an embedded serial number, wherein the medication is a pill, tablet, or capsule, and wherein the code is computer readable;
- a reader device comprising a display and an imaging device adapted to read the code and extract the embedded serial number, wherein the reader device is configured to capture biometric information of a person in possession of the medication, and wherein the reader device is further configured to receive location information corresponding to a geographic location;
- a database system comprising a number of databases, wherein each database is associated with a geographic area and comprises a number of serial numbers, wherein each serial number is associated with a prescribed medication, patient identity information for the recipient of the prescribed medication, and stored biometric data for the recipient of the prescribed medication;
- and
- a first server in electronic communication with the reader device and the database system comprising a processor, an electronic storage device, and executable software instructions stored on the electronic storage device, which when executed by the processor configure the first server to:
- receive the embedded serial number, biometric data corresponding to the captured biometric information, and location information from the reader device;
- determine which database in the database system to query by determining which database is associated with a geographic area comprising the geographic location;
- query the database based on the embedded serial number;
- receive match information from the database;
- and
- transmit the match information to the reader device;
- wherein the database comprises a database processor, a database electronic storage device, and database executable software instructions stored on the database electronic storage device, which in response to the query from the first server and when executed by the database processor configure the database to:
- retrieve stored biometric data associated with one of the number of serial numbers when the one of the number of serial numbers matches the queried embedded serial number;
- determine if the stored biometric data matches the biometric data extracted from the captured biometric information and generate match information based on the determination;
- and
- transmit the match information to the first server indicating whether the retrieved stored biometric data matches the extracted biometric data, but not transmitting the patient identity information;
- wherein the reader device is configured to display the match information;
- wherein the first server is remote from the reader device;
- and
- wherein the match information comprises an indication of the presence or non-presence of a match such that patient identity information for the recipient of the prescribed medication is not received or displayed.
A system for verifying legitimate possession of a medication comprising:
- a code printed on the medication comprising an embedded serial number, wherein the medication is a pill, tablet, or capsule, and wherein the code is computer readable;
- a reader device comprising a display and an imaging device adapted to read the code and extract the embedded serial number, wherein the reader device is configured receive location information corresponding to a geographic location;
- a database system comprising a number of databases, wherein each database is associated with a geographic area and comprises a number of serial numbers, wherein each serial number is associated with a prescribed medication and patient identity information for the recipient of the prescribed medication;
- and
- a first server in electronic communication with the reader device and the database system comprising a processor, an electronic storage device, and executable software instructions stored on the electronic storage device, which when executed by the processor configure the first server to:
- receive the embedded serial number and location information from the reader device;
- determine which database in the database system to query by determining which database is associated with a geographic area comprising the geographic location;
- query the database based on the embedded serial number;
- receive linked information from the database;
- and
- transmit the linked information to the reader device, wherein the linked information comprises patient information associated with the serial number;
- wherein the database comprises a database processor, a database electronic storage device, and database executable software instructions stored on the database electronic storage device, which in response to the query from the first server and when executed by the database processor configure the database to:
- retrieve the linked information associated with one of the number of serial numbers when the one of the number of serial numbers matches the queried embedded serial number;
- and
- transmit the linked information to the first server;
- wherein the reader device is configured to display the linked information;
- wherein the first server is remote from the reader device;
- and
- wherein the linked information is configured for identification of a patient in possession of the medication.
