MIMO communication system for vehicles

A system configured for mounting along or near a path of a vehicle, the system comprising:

• a first plurality of antennas;
• a second plurality of antennas;
• a plurality of first transceiver ports configured for providing signal paths to the first plurality of antennas;
• a plurality of second transceiver ports configured for providing signal paths to the second plurality of antennas;
• and
• one or more circuits configured for handling signals transmitted and/or received via the first plurality of antennas and the second plurality of antennas;
• wherein:
• the first plurality of antennas is configured for providing, along the path of the vehicle, a first radiation pattern when first signals are communicated in a direction of the second plurality of antennas;
• the second plurality of antennas is configured for providing, along the path of the vehicle, a second radiation pattern when second signals are communicated in a direction of the first plurality of antennas;
• the plurality of first transceiver ports and the plurality of second transceiver ports are configured for providing signal paths to the first plurality of antennas and the second plurality of antennas based on a port configuration scheme;
• and
• the port configuration scheme comprises use of one or more first ports from the plurality of first transceiver ports for coupling to the first plurality of antennas and one or more second ports from the plurality of second transceiver ports for coupling to the second plurality of antennas, wherein:
• the one or more first ports and one or more second ports are selected to optimize communication in one or both of the first radiation pattern and the second radiation pattern, and
• selection of the one or more first ports is based on selection of the one or more second ports, such that only different ports are used in the plurality of first transceiver ports and the plurality of second transceiver ports.
