Abstract
A LiDAR system includes alight emitter, a light detector, and a controller. The controller is programmed to: activate the light emitter to emit a series of shots into a field of view of the light detector; activate the light detector to detect shots reflected from an object in the field of view; record the detected shots from a first subset of the series of shots; group a second subset of the series of shots not in the first subset; and based on the detected shots from the second subset of the series of shots, identify an object moving in the field of view.
Claims23
A light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system comprising:
- a light emitter;
- a light detector;
- and a controller programmed to:
- activate the light emitter to emit a series of shots into a field of view of the light detector;
- activate the light detector to detect shots reflected from an object in the field of view;
- record only the detected shots from a first subset of the series of shots;
- wherein the first subset of the series of shots has a size that is determined by the controller and is variable, and the size of the first subset of the series of shots is determined by the controller prior to transmission of the shots from the light emitter based upon a distance to the object, wherein the object may be a first object or a second object, the first object is nearer to the light detector than the second object, and a first size of the first subset is determined to record the first object and a second size of the first subset is determined to record the second object, the first size being less than the second size, the first size providing a first resolution that is less than a second resolution provided by the second size;
- group a second subset of the series of shots not in the first subset;
- and
- based on the detected shots from the second subset of the series of shots, identify the object moving in the field of view.
A method operating a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system, the method comprising:
- activating a light emitter to emit a series of shots into a field of view of a light detector;
- activating the light detector to detect shots reflected from an object in the field of view;
- recording only detected shots from a first subset of the series of shots;
- wherein the first subset of the series of shots has a size that is variable and the size of the first subset of the series of shots is determined by a controller prior to transmission from the light emitter based upon a distance to the object, wherein the object may be a first object or a second object, the first object is nearer to the light detector than the second object, and a first size of the first subset is determined to record the first object and a second size of the first subset is determined to record the second object, the first size being less than the second size, the first size providing a first resolution that is less than a second resolution provided by the second size;
- grouping a second subset of the series of shots not in the first subset;
- and
- identifying the object moving in the field of view based on detected shots from the second subset of the series of shots.
