Abstract
Reinforced metal matrix composites are described including a porous ceramic reinforcement and a metal matrix in interstitial contact with the ceramic reinforcement. Methods of forming reinforced metal matrix composites are described including contacting a porous ceramic reinforcement with a liquid metal matrix and solidifying the liquid metal matrix.
Claims22
A reinforced metal matrix composite comprising;
- a porous ceramic reinforcement having pores therein;
- and
- a metal matrix in interstitial contact with the ceramic reinforcement within the pores, wherein the metal matrix comprises ceramic particles in an amount of from 20% to 30% by volume of the metal matrix therein, the ceramic particles are distributed throughout the metal matrix, the ceramic particles comprise agglomerated aluminum oxide particles, and wherein the agglomerated aluminum oxide particles comprise bonded aluminum oxide crystals having a diameter of from 100 microns to 200 microns.
