Abstract
Light reflected from a pregnant woman's abdomen and fetus contained therein that has been received by a detector and converted into a reflected electronic signal may be received by a processor. A portion of the reflected electronic signal that is reflected from the fetus may be isolated and the isolated portion of the reflected electronic signal may be analyzed to determine a fetal hemoglobin oxygen saturation level of the fetus. The isolation may be achieved by synchronizing the reflected electronic signal with a fetal heartbeat signal and multiplying the synchronized reflected electronic signal by the synchronized fetal heartbeat signal.
Claims9
A method for determining a fetal hemoglobin oxygen saturation level comprising:
- projecting, by a first light source, light of a first wavelength into the abdomen of a pregnant mammal toward a fetus contained therein;
- projecting, by a second light source, light of a second wavelength into the abdomen of the pregnant mammal toward the fetus;
- detecting, by a detector, light of the first wavelength and the second wavelength reflected from the abdomen of the pregnant mammal and the fetus and generating a reflected electronic signal corresponding to the reflected light;
- receiving, by a processor, a pulse oximetry measurement of an oxygen saturation level of the pregnant mammal's arterial blood from a pulse oximetry probe positioned on the pregnant mammal;
- filtering, by the processor, the reflected electronic signal using the pulse oximetry measurement received from the pulse oximetry probe to isolate a portion of the reflected electronic signal corresponding to the light reflected from the fetus;
- and
- determining, by the processor, the fetal hemoglobin oxygen saturation level using the portion of the reflected electronic signal corresponding to the light reflected from the fetus.
A system for determining a fetal hemoglobin oxygen saturation level comprising:
- a first light source adapted to project light of a first wavelength into the abdomen of a pregnant mammal toward a fetus contained therein;
- a second light source adapted to project light of a second wavelength into the abdomen of the pregnant mammal toward the fetus;
- a pulse oximetry probe;
- a detector adapted to detect light of the first wavelength and the second wavelength reflected from the abdomen of the pregnant mammal and the fetus and generate a reflected electronic signal corresponding to the reflected light;
- and
- a processor, the processor being configured to:
- receive a pulse oximetry measurement of an oxygen saturation level of the pregnant mammal's arterial blood from the pulse oximetry probe when positioned on the pregnant mammal, wherein the pulse oximetry measurement represents an oxygen saturation level of the pregnant mammal's arterial blood;
- filter the reflected electronic signal using the pulse oximetry measurement received from the pulse oximetry probe to isolate a portion of the reflected electronic signal corresponding to the light reflected from the fetus;
- and
- determine the fetal hemoglobin oxygen saturation level using the portion of the reflected electronic signal corresponding to the light reflected from the fetus.
