Abstract
Methods and compositions of storing a biological material are described herein. In some embodiments, these methods provide one or more advantages over current methods. For example, methods described herein can be used to prepare and process biological materials for storage at elevated temperatures. In one aspect, a method of storing a biological material comprises providing a preservation composition and exposing the preservation composition to electromagnetic radiation to form an amorphous solid matrix containing the biological material. In some embodiments, the method further comprises monitoring temperature of the preservation composition during the exposure to the electromagnetic radiation.
Claims20
A biological composition comprising:
- a biological material contained in an amorphous solid matrix comprising a disaccharide component, wherein the biological composition has the identifying features resultant of a method comprising:
- (a) providing a preservation composition comprising the biological material, the disaccharide component, a salt component, and water;
- and
- (b) exposing the preservation composition to an amount of electromagnetic radiation sufficient to form said amorphous solid matrix containing the biological material suitable for storage at ambient temperature, wherein the electromagnetic radiation is near infrared (NIR) laser light and/or radiation having a wavelength of 1-3 μm, and wherein the amorphous solid matrix has a glass transition temperature (Tg) greater than −30° C.
A biological composition comprising:
- a biological material contained in an amorphous solid matrix comprising a disaccharide component, wherein the biological composition has the identifying features resultant of a method comprising:
- (a) providing a preservation composition comprising the biological material, the disaccharide component, a salt component, and water;
- and
- (b) exposing the preservation composition to an amount of electromagnetic radiation sufficient to form said amorphous solid matrix containing the biological material suitable for storage at ambient temperature, wherein the electromagnetic radiation is near infrared (NIR) laser light and/or radiation having a wavelength of 1-3 μm, and wherein the amorphous solid matrix has a water content less than 0.2 gH2O/gdw of the biological composition.
