Abstract
An electronic component includes a wire winding wound around a central axis. The wire winding having first and second ends, and first and second terminals are connected to or formed by the first and second ends. The terminals provide electrical contacts for connecting the component into a circuit. The component has a wet press molded body made of a mixture of magnetic and non-magnetic material that is heated and pressed about the wire winding. The wet press molded body leaves at least a portion of the terminals exposed for mounting the component to the circuit.

An electronic component comprising:
- a core having a flange portion including a first surface, a second surface opposite the first surface, and side surfaces extending between the first surface and the second surface, the core having a post extending from the first surface of the flange portion to an end portion opposite the flange portion;
- a first terminal;
- a second terminal;
- a coil of wire about the post of the core, the coil of wire including a plurality of coil turns, the coil of wire having a first end portion bent around the flange portion and a second end portion bent around the flange portion, the coil of wire having a first axial end surface facing the first surface of the flange portion of the core and a second axial end surface opposite the first axial end surface;
- and
- a single piece, single layer overmolded body encasing at least a portion of the coil of wire such that the overmolded body contacts and conforms to a radially outer portion of the coil of wire and the second axial end surface of the coil of wire, the overmolded body being secured to the coil of wire and the core by engagement of the overmolded body with the coil of wire and the core, the overmolded body mechanically secured to the coil of wire by the overmolded body interlocking with the plurality of coil turns of the coil,
- the overmolded body contacting each of the side surfaces of the flange portion of the core to completely encircle the flange portion such that the overmolded body conforms to the side surfaces of the flange portion, the overmolded body extending along the side surfaces of the flange portion of the core from the first surface of the flange portion to the second surface of the flange portion about the entire periphery of the flange portion,
- wherein the overmolded outer body is by weight about 80%-92% powdered iron and 8%-20% polymer binder.
An electronic component comprising:
- a core having a flange portion and a post extending from the flange portion to an end portion opposite the flange portion, the flange portion having a side surface including a protrusion, the side surface having a recessed first portion and a recessed second portion on opposite sides of the protrusion recessed from the protrusion;
- a first terminal;
- a second terminal;
- a coil of wire about the post of the core, the coil of wire having a first end portion bent around the flange portion and a second end portion bent around the flange portion, the coil of wire having a first axial end surface facing the flange portion of the core and a second axial end surface opposite the first axial end surface;
- and
- an overmolded body encasing at least a portion of the coil of wire such that the overmolded body contacts and conforms to a radially outer portion of the coil of wire and the second axial end surface of the coil of wire, the overmolded body encircling the flange portion of the core with the overmolded body being at the recessed first portion and the recessed second portion;
- wherein the overmolded outer body is by weight about 80%-92% powdered iron and 8%-20% polymer binder,
- wherein the overmolded body covers the end portion of the post opposite the flange portion.
