Abstract
An additive manufacturing system, a build platform and a method of operating are provided. The build platform includes an interface section configured to couple with the additive manufacturing system. A base section is coupled to the interface section. A build volume is provided having at least one layer having at least one individually addressable element that includes at least one of a feature characteristic or functional characteristic.

A build platform for an additive manufacturing system, the build platform comprising:
- an interface section configured to couple with the additive manufacturing system;
- a base structure coupled to the interface section;
- and
- a build volume coupled to the base structure, the build volume having a plurality of independently configurable layers, each layer having a volume mesh that is comprised of at least one individually addressable element that includes at least one functional characteristic, wherein the at least one functional characteristic is controllable by the build platform;
- wherein the plurality of layers are arranged in series;
- wherein the plurality of layers have an outermost surface and the outermost surface is configured to receive a deposited material from the additive manufacturing system,
- wherein the at least one individually addressable element is configured to modify a characteristic of the deposited material.

- wherein the at least one layer has an outermost surface configured to receive a deposited material from the additive manufacturing system,
- wherein the at least one individually addressable element is configured to modify a characteristic of the deposited material.
