Abstract
An external distraction apparatus for performing a craniofacial distraction is disclosed. The external distraction apparatus may comprise a stationary member. The stationary member may be configured to be affixed to a head of a patient. The external distraction apparatus may also comprise laterally disposed distractors. The laterally disposed distractors may extend inferiorly from the stationary member and be moveable relative to the stationary member.
Claims22
A craniofacial external distraction apparatus comprising:
- a stationary member having an unclosed shape and configured to be affixed to a first and second lateral side of a head of a patient via respective fixations for each of the first and second lateral side such that the stationary member is disposed superior to eyes of the patient;
- a pair of upright bodies, each of the pair of upright bodies being coupled to the stationary member adjacent to a respective one of the first and second lateral side of the head, the upright bodies extending in an inferior direction to the stationary member;
- and
- an arm extending from each of the pair of the upright bodies in an anterior direction different from the inferior direction, the arms including a span curving toward the sagittal plane at a first end region of each of the arms and being coupled to the upright bodies at a second opposing end region of each of the arms, the arms being freestanding with respect to one another, the arm members devoid of skeletal anchor and bone fixation hardware.
A craniofacial external distraction apparatus comprising:
- a stationary member configured to be affixed to a first and second lateral side of a head of a patient via respective fixations for the first and second lateral side of the head;
- an upright body coupled to the stationary member adjacent to the lateral side of the head, the upright body inferior to the stationary member and displaceable only in a translational manner relative to the stationary member;
- an arm coupled to the upright body, the arm extending anteriorly and including a posterior portion and an anterior portion pivotally coupled to the posterior portion, the anterior portion including a coupling for a transcutaneous member at an end thereof, the arm devoid of skeletal anchor and bone fixation hardware.
A craniofacial external distraction apparatus comprising:
- a member configured to be rendered stationary with respect to a head of a patient, at a location superior to the eyes of the patient, via a first side and opposing side of the head of the patient, the member being constructed of rigid material and having an unclosed shape;
- an upright body coupled to the member adjacent to the lateral side of the head, the upright body inferior to the member;
- an arm coupled to the upright body at a posterior portion of the arm and extending anteriorly from the upright body, at least a portion of the arm being pivotally displaceable about an axis non-parallel to a sagittal plane of the head and relative to the upright body along an arc sweeping along a plane running in the posterior to anterior direction, the arm configured to couple to a separate transcutaneous member which does not form part of the arm.
A craniofacial external distraction apparatus comprising:
- a superiorly disposed stationary member configured to be affixed to a first lateral side and a second lateral side of a head of a patient via skeletal fixations;
- a body coupled to the stationary member adjacent to one of the first and second lateral side of the head, the body extending inferiorly from the stationary member;
- an arm coupled to the body and extending anteriorly therefrom, the anterior most span of the arm displaceable relative to the remainder of the arm without bending the arm, a posterior most span of the arm being other than inferior to an inferior most portion of the body, the arm devoid of skeletal anchor and bone fixation hardware.
A craniofacial external distraction apparatus comprising:
- a superiorly disposed member having a first and second spans which extend parallel to one another, the parallel spans connected at first ends thereof by a curved span, the parallel spans otherwise unconnected to one another;
- a body coupled to one of the first and second spans, the body extending inferiorly in a first direction relative to the stationary member and incapable of pivotal displacement relative the spans;
- an arm coupled to the body and extending anteriorly therefrom in a second direction different from the first direction, the arm having at least one portion which is displaceable relative to the body, the arm devoid of skeletal anchor and bone fixation hardware.
A craniofacial external distraction apparatus comprising:
- a superiorly disposed stationary member having first and second laterally disposed straight portions joined by a curved span disposed anteriorly to the straight portions;
- a body coupled to each of the first and second laterally disposed straight portions and extending in an inferior direction thereto, each body incapable of pivotal displacement relative the stationary member;
- an arm coupled to each the bodies each arm extending from the respective body in an anterior direction different from the inferior direction and including at least one portion that is displaceable relative to the respective body.
