Abstract
The present invention relates generally to improved systems and methods for removing undesirable material residing in vessels. More specifically, the present invention relates to systems and methods for using at least one cannula to remove substantially en bloc, from a site of obstruction or interest, undesirable material without fragmentation and without excessive fluid loss.

A device for removal of an undesirable material from within a vasculature, the device comprising:
- an aspiration cannula comprising an expandable funnel, wherein the aspiration cannula is configured to be in operable fluid communication with a pump configured to generate a suction force;
- an outer sheath configured such that the aspiration cannula can coaxially move independently within the outer sheath;
- wherein the expandable funnel comprises an impermeable polymer jacket and a metallic reinforcement member comprising a metallic proximal end and a metallic expansion member extending from the metallic proximal end, the metallic proximal end configured to be coupled to an outer surface of the cannula distal end;
- wherein the metallic expansion member comprises a shape memory material pre-shaped in an expanded configuration to automatically expand the expandable funnel when released from constraint of the outer sheath;
- and
- wherein the metallic expansion member is configured to resist collapse from the suction force but permit radial compression of the expandable funnel when withdrawn into the outer sheath.
A device for removal of an undesirable material from within a vasculature, the device comprising:
- an aspiration cannula coupled to an expandable funnel, wherein the aspiration cannula is configured to be in operable fluid communication with a pump configured to generate a suction force;
- an outer sheath configured to be circumferentially situated about the expandable funnel, and wherein the aspiration cannula is configured to move coaxially in a lumen of the outer sheath;
- wherein the expandable funnel comprises an impermeable wall and a unitary metallic reinforcement structure comprising a metallic proximal collar and a metallic expansion member, the metallic proximal collar being configured to couple to an outer surface of the cannula distal end by a lap joint, and the metallic expansion member being configured to extend from the metallic proximal collar;
- wherein the metallic expansion member is comprised of nitinol and is configured to be pre-shaped in an expanded configuration to automatically expand the expandable funnel when released from constraint of the outer sheath;
- wherein the metallic expansion member is configured to resist collapse from the suction force but permit radial compression of the expandable funnel when withdrawn into the outer sheath;
- and
- wherein a distal section of the metallic expansion member is substantially rounded.
A device for removal of a pulmonary embolism from within a pulmonary artery, the device comprising:
- an aspiration cannula coupled to an expandable funnel, wherein the aspiration cannula is configured to be in operable fluid communication with a pump configured to generate a suction force;
- and wherein the expandable funnel comprises a polymer wall and a unitary metallic reinforcement structure;
- an outer sheath configured such that the aspiration cannula can coaxially slide within the outer sheath;
- wherein the unitary reinforcement structure is defined by a nitinol proximal section and a nitinol expansion member extending from the nitinol proximal section;
- wherein the nitinol proximal section is configured to be coupled to an outer surface of the cannula distal end;
- wherein the nitinol expansion member is shaped in an pre-defined configuration to automatically expand the expandable funnel when released from constraint of the outer sheath;
- wherein the nitinol expansion member is configured to resist collapse from the suction force but permit radial collapse of the expandable funnel when constrained by the outer sheath;
- and
- wherein a distal end of the metallic expansion member is substantially rounded and a proximal end of the metallic expansion member is substantially straight.
A device for removal of an undesirable material from within a vasculature, the device comprising:
- an aspiration cannula comprising an expandable funnel, wherein the aspiration cannula is configured to be in operable fluid communication with a pump configured to generate a suction force;
- an outer sheath configured to be circumferentially situated about the expandable funnel;
- wherein the expandable funnel comprises a polymer wall and a unitary metallic structure comprising a metallic proximal end configured to be coupled to an outer surface of the cannula distal end, and a metallic expansion member extending from the metallic proximal end;
- wherein the metallic expansion member comprises a shape memory material pre-shaped in an expanded configuration to automatically expand the expandable funnel when released from constraint of the outer sheath;
- wherein a distal most end of the polymer wall is configured to extend a select distance distally beyond a distal most end of the metallic expansion member, thereby forming an atraumatic distal end of the expandable funnel;
- and
- wherein the metallic expansion member is configured to resist collapse from the suction force but permit radial compression of the expandable funnel when withdrawn into the outer sheath.
