A composition for forming a polarizer comprising:

• a polymerizable liquid crystal compound represented by formula (A-1) which exhibits a liquid crystal state of a smectic phase;
• a monofunctional polymerizable compound represented by Formula (B-1) which has one polymerizable group;
• and
• a dichroic material,
• wherein the number of atoms NA of the polymerizable liquid crystal compound represented by formula (A-1) and the number of atoms NB of the monofunctional polymerizable compound represented by Formula (B-1) satisfy Expression (2),
• wherein the content of the monofunctional polymerizable compound is in a range of 1 to 30 parts by mass in a case where the total mass of the solid content of the composition is set to 100 parts by mass,

• wherein the monofunctional polymerizable compound represented by Formula (B-1) is:
• Q3-V3-SP3-X3-(Mb-Lb)nb-Tb (B-1)
• wherein in Formula (B-1), Q3 represents a polymerizable group,
• V3 and X3 each independently represent a single bond or a divalent linking group,
• SP3 represents a divalent spacer group,
• Mb represents an aromatic ring or an alicyclic ring which may have a substituent, where a plurality of Mbs may be the same as or different from each other,
• Lb represents a divalent linking group selected from the group consisting of —O—, —(CF2)g—, —Si(CH3)2—, —(Si(CH3)2O)g—, —(OSi(CH3)2)g— (g represents an integer of 1 to 10), —N(Z)—, —C(Z)═C(Z′)—, —C(Z)═N—, —N═C(Z)—, —C(Z)2—C(Z′)2—, —C(O)—, —OC(O)—, —C(O)O—, —O—C(O)O—, —N(Z)C(O)—, —C(O)N(Z)—, —C(Z)═C(Z′)—C(O)O—, —O—C(O)—C(Z)═C(Z′)—, —C(Z)═N—, —N═C(Z)—, —C(Z)═C(Z′)—C(O)N(Z″)—, —N(Z″)—C(O)—C(Z)═C(Z′)—, —C(Z)═C(Z′)—C(O)—S—, —S—C(O)—C(Z)═C(Z′)—, —C(Z)═N—N═C(Z′)— (Z, Z′, and Z″ each independently represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group, an aryl group, a cyano group, or a halogen atom), —C≡C—, —N═N—, —S—, —S(O)—, —S(O)(O)—, —(O)S(O)O—, —O(O)S(O)O—, —SC(O)—, —C(O)S—, and a group obtained by combining two or more of these groups, where a plurality of Lbs may be the same as or different from each other,
• nb represents an integer of 2 to 5, and
• Tb represents a hydrogen atom or a monovalent substituent;
• wherein the monofunctional polymerizable compound represented by Formula (B-1) has a terminal atom located at a terminal end of Q3;
• wherein the monofunctional polymerizable compound represented by Formula (B-1) has a terminal atom located at a terminal end of Tb;
• wherein the terminal atom of Q3 is connected to the terminal atom of Tb by atoms bonded together between the terminal atom of Q3 and the terminal atom of Tb;
• wherein NB is a numerical value determined for the monofunctional polymerizable compound represented by Formula (B-1) is equal to the number of atoms bonded together between the terminal atom of Q3 and the terminal atom of Tb of the monofunctional polymerizable compound, including the terminal atom of Q3 and the terminal atom of Tb;
• wherein the polymerizable liquid crystal compound represented by Formula (A-1) is:
• Q1-V1-SP1-X1-(Ma-La)na-X2-SP2-V2-Q2 (A-1)
• wherein:
• Q1 and Q2 each independently represent a polymerizable group,
• V1, V2, X1, and X2 each independently represent a single bond or a divalent linking group,
• SP1 and SP2 each independently represent a divalent spacer group,
• Ma represents an aromatic ring or an alicyclic ring which may have a substituent, where a plurality of Mas may be the same as or different from each other,
• La represents a single bond or a divalent linking group, where a plurality of La may be the same as or different from each other, and
• na represents an integer of 2 to 10;
• wherein the polymerizable liquid crystal compound represented by Formula (A-1) has a terminal atom located at a terminal end of Q1;
• wherein the polymerizable liquid crystal compound represented by Formula (A-1) has a terminal atom located at a terminal end of Q2;
• wherein the terminal atom of Q1 is connected to the terminal atom of Q2 by atoms bonded together between the terminal atom of Q1 and the terminal atom of Q2;
• and
• wherein NA is a numerical value determined for the polymerizable liquid crystal compound represented by Formula (A-1) is equal to the number of atoms bonded together between the terminal atom of Q1 and the terminal atom of Q2 of the polymerizable liquid crystal compound represented by Formula (A-1), including the terminal atom of Q1 and the terminal atom of Q2.
