Abstract
A switch system includes a mechanical switch for switching electrical currents, the mechanical switch operating in one of a closed state and an open state; the system further including an actuator configured to change the state of the mechanical switch, wherein the actuator comprises a Thomson-coil system including a Thomson coil, and wherein the mechanical switch and the Thomson coil are electrically connected in series.

A switch system, comprising:
- a mechanical switch for switching electrical currents, comprising a closed state and an open state;
- and
- an actuator configured to change the state of the mechanical switch, wherein the actuator comprises a Thomson-coil system including a Thomson coil, the Thomson coil comprising:
- a flat coil with a conductive plate parallel to the flat coil;
- wherein a number of turns of an electrical conductive path of the Thomson coil is between 4 and 50, and
- wherein an outer diameter of the Thomson coil is between 20 mm and 250 mm;
- wherein the mechanical switch and the Thomson coil are electrically connected in series.
