Abstract
Methods and seismic data processing apparatuses use a down-going annihilation operator to generate an image from seismic data acquired over a water-covered subsurface formation. The down-going annihilation operator is derived using a down-going wavefield and an estimated water-wave extracted from the seismic data. The down-going annihilation operator may be derived in plane-wave domain.

A seismic exploration method for determining presence and location of underground resources, the method comprising:
- obtaining a down-going wavefield D in a space-time domain from seismic data acquired by at least one receiver over a water-covered subsurface formation;
- estimating a water-wave W in the space-time domain;
- deriving a down-going annihilation operator Rdwan which when applied to the down-going wavefield D yields the estimated water-wave W as Rdwan=W/(D+ε) where ε is a noise term;
- and
- generating an image of the water-covered subsurface formation based on the down-going annihilation operator, the image indicating presence and location of the underground resources in the water-covered subsurface formation.
A seismic data processing apparatus for determining presence and location of underground resources, the apparatus comprising:
- an input/output interface configured to receive seismic data acquired by at least one receiver over a water-covered subsurface formation and to output an image of the water-covered subsurface formation;
- and
- a data processing unit connected to the input/output interface and configured
- to obtain a down-going wavefield D in a space-time domain from seismic data acquired by at least one receiver over a water-covered subsurface formation;
- to estimate a water-wave W in the space-time domain;
- to derive a down-going annihilation operator Rdwan which when applied to the down-going wavefield D yields the estimated water-wave W as Rdwan=W/(D+ε) where ε is a noise term;
- and
- to generate an image of the water-covered subsurface formation based on the down-going annihilation operator, the image indicating presence and location of the underground resources in the water-covered subsurface formation.
