Abstract
A nasal/oral cannula for collecting a flow of exhaled gases and its method of manufacture are disclosed. The cannula comprises an elongated tubular body having a first and a second end portion, a surface and an internal volume; a wall internally disposed within said tubular body, said wall defining a first subvolume of said internal volume in the lengthwise direction of the tubular body; and an inlet through said surface, for introducing exhaled gases into said first subvolume. The first end portion defines an exit port for exhaled gases from said subvolume, and said wall is arranged directly adjacent to said inlet.

A respiratory cannula system comprising:
- a treating gas tube configured to receive treating gas from a gas source;
- a first nozzle configured to receive the treating gas from the treating gas tube;
- a cannula comprising:
- a tubular body comprising a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and an interior, said first end configured to connect to the first nozzle;
- a wall arranged within the interior of the tubular body and configured to divide the interior of the tubular body into a first interior portion and a second interior portion, said first interior portion configured to receive said treating gas from the first nozzle;
- an outlet extending through the tubular body and in fluid communication with the first interior portion;
- a first nostril prong extending outward from the tubular body at the outlet and configured to direct said treating gas to a first nostril of a subject;
- a first inlet extending through the tubular body and in fluid communication with the second interior portion;
- a second nostril prong extending outward from the tubular body at the first inlet and configured to direct gases exhaled from a second nostril of the subject into said second interior portion;
- and
- a second inlet extending through the tubular body and in fluid communication with the second interior portion, wherein said wall is integrally formed with the tubular body at the second inlet and is oriented perpendicular relative to an axis extending through a center of the tubular body;
- an oral breath collector configured to connect to the tubular body at the second inlet and direct gases exhaled from a mouth of the subject into said second interior portion;
- a second nozzle configured to connect to the second end of the tubular body and receive said gases exhaled from the subject's second nostril and mouth via said second interior portion;
- and
- a sampling tube configured to receive said exhaled gases from the second nozzle and direct said exhaled gases to a gas analyzer.
A respiratory cannula system comprising:
- a cannula comprising:
- a tubular body comprising a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and an interior;
- a wall configured to divide the interior of the tubular body into a first interior portion and a second interior portion, said first interior portion configured to receive treating gas;
- an outlet extending through the tubular body and in fluid communication with the first interior portion;
- a first nostril prong extending outward from the tubular body at the outlet and configured to direct said treating gas to a first nostril of a subject;
- a first inlet extending through the tubular body and in fluid communication with the second interior portion;
- a second inlet extending through the tubular body and in fluid communication with the second interior portion, wherein said wall is integrally formed with the tubular body at the second inlet;
- and
- a second nostril prong extending outward from the tubular body at the first inlet and configured to direct gases exhaled from a second nostril of the subject into said second interior portion;
- and
- an oral breath collector configured to connect to the tubular body at the second inlet and direct gases exhaled from a mouth of the subject into said second interior portion;
- wherein said second interior portion is configured to direct said gases exhaled from the subject's second nostril and mouth towards the second end of the tubular body.
A respiratory cannula comprising:
- a tubular body comprising a first end, a second end opposite the first end, and an interior;
- a wall configured to divide the interior of the tubular body into a first interior portion and a second interior portion, said first interior portion configured to receive treating gas;
- an outlet extending through the tubular body and in fluid communication with the first interior portion;
- a first nostril prong extending outward from the tubular body at the outlet and configured to direct said treating gas to a first nostril of a subject;
- a first inlet extending through the tubular body and in fluid communication with the second interior portion;
- a second nostril prong extending outward from the tubular body at the first inlet and configured to direct gases exhaled from a second nostril of the subject into said second interior portion;
- and
- a second inlet extending through the tubular body and in fluid communication with the second interior portion, wherein said wall is integrally formed with the tubular body at the second inlet;
- wherein the respiratory cannula is configured to connect to an oral breath collector at the second inlet of the tubular body, said second inlet configured to allow gases exhaled from a mouth of the subject to flow into said second interior portion;
- wherein said second interior portion is configured to direct said gases exhaled from the subject's second nostril and mouth towards the second end of the tubular body.
