Abstract
On a device with an internet protocol network connection, an application is provided that allows a user to watch internet protocol television on the device. While the user is watching a first live internet protocol television program via the application on the device, an accurate current list of second through Nth live internet protocol television programs that are available to be watched by the user is displayed. The device could include, for example, a gaming console, a media streamer, or the like.
Claims26
A method comprising the steps of:
- providing, by a cable operator, on a device with an internet protocol network connection, an application that allows a user to watch internet protocol television on said device, the device comprising a game console, the internet protocol network connection being provided via consumer premises equipment wired to a hybrid fiber-coaxial network of said cable operator;
- said application using an application programming interface (API) to authenticate with an authentication server of a backend system of said cable operator via the internet protocol network connection;
- obtaining, by said application using said application programming interface (API) to access an electronic program guide (EPG) data store of said cable operator's backend system via the internet protocol network connection, electronic program guide (EPG) data;
- deriving, by said application from the EPG data obtained through the API, an accurate current list of second through Nth live internet protocol television programs that are available to be watched by said user;
- and
- displaying, by said application, while said user is watching a first live internet protocol television program via said application on said device, the accurate current list of second through Nth live internet protocol television programs that are available to be watched by said user, in the form of a live streaming video picture-in-picture overlay on the live video feed of the first live internet protocol television program.
A method comprising the steps of:
- providing, by a cable operator, on a device with an internet protocol network connection, an application that allows a user to watch internet protocol television on said device, the device comprising a game console, the internet protocol network connection being provided via consumer premises equipment wired to a hybrid fiber-coaxial network of said cable operator;
- said application using an application programming interface (API) to authenticate with an authentication server of a backend system of said cable operator via the internet protocol network connection;
- obtaining, by said application using said application programming interface (API) to access a video-on-demand (VOD) server of said cable operator's backend system via the internet protocol network connection, a video-on-demand (VOD) catalog;
- deriving, by said application from the VOD catalog obtained through the API, an accurate current list of a plurality of internet protocol television video-on-demand programs that are available to be watched by said user;
- and
- displaying, by said application, while said user is watching a first video-on-demand internet protocol television program via said application on said device, the accurate current list of a plurality of internet protocol television video-on-demand programs that are available to be watched by said user, in the form of a live streaming video picture-in-picture overlay on the live video feed of the first live internet protocol television program, said first video-on-demand internet protocol television program including an episode of a series, said plurality of internet protocol television video-on-demand programs that are available to be watched by said user including additional episodes of said series.
A game console device comprising:
- an internet protocol network connection provided via consumer premises equipment wired to a hybrid fiber-coaxial network of a cable operator;
- a memory including executable code;
- and
- at least one processor, coupled to said memory and said internet protocol network connection;
- wherein:
- said executable code configures said processor to implement an application, provided by said cable operator, that allows a user to watch internet protocol television on said device;
- said executable code configures said processor to use an application programming interface (API) to authenticate with an authentication server of a backend system of said cable operator via the internet protocol network connection;
- said executable code configures said processor to use said application programming interface (API) to access an electronic program guide (EPG) data store of said cable operator's backend system via the internet protocol network connection and obtain electronic program guide (EPG) data;
- said executable code configures said processor to derive, from the EPG data obtained through the API, an accurate current list of second through Nth live internet protocol television programs that are available to be watched by said user;
- and
- said executable code configures said processor to display, via said application, while said user is watching a first live internet protocol television program via said application on said device, the accurate current list of second through Nth live internet protocol television programs that are available to be watched by said user, in the form of a live streaming video picture-in-picture overlay on the live video feed of the first live internet protocol television program.
