Repairing unresolved dangling references after failover

A system of promoting a failover group to an operating group, the system comprising:

• a memory;
• and
• one or more processors operatively coupled to the memory, the one or more processors to:
• replicate, from a source group to the failover group, at least one object associated with an external reference, the external reference associated with an external object outside of the source group, wherein the source group is editable by a user while the failover group is a backup version of the source group;
• record every object in the source group and associated one or more references thereof in a first reference map;
• provide the first reference map to the failover group to establish a relationship between the external reference and the external object;
• and
• upon receiving a command, promote the failover group to the operating group as the source group and maintain a functional relationship with the external object via the external reference by:
• refreshing, in the failover group or the operating group based on the first reference map and a second reference map recording a missing rebuilt relationship between the replica of the at least one object and the external object, a survey of objects associated with external references;
• and
• updating the second reference map when a relationship between the at least one object and the external object has been established, merged into the first reference map, or removed.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium of promoting a failover group to an operating group, the non-transitory computer-readable medium having instructions stored thereon which, when executed by one or more processors, causes the one or more processors to:

• replicate, from a source group to the failover group, at least one object associated with an external reference, the external reference associated with an external object outside of the source group, wherein the source group is editable by a user while the failover group is a backup version of the source group;
• record every object in the source group and associated one or more references thereof in a first reference map;
• provide the first reference map to the failover group to establish a relationship between the external reference and the external object;
• and
• upon receiving a command, promote the failover group to the operating group as the source group and maintain a functional relationship with the external object via the external reference by:
• refreshing, in the failover group or the operating group based on the first reference map and a second reference map recording a missing rebuilt relationship between the replica of the at least one object and the external object, a survey of objects associated with external references;
• and
• updating the second reference map when a relationship between the at least one object and the external object has been established, merged into the first reference map, or removed.
