Claims20
A system for separating inner and outer fibers from plant stalks comprising:
- 1) an initial separation apparatus comprising:
- a) three rotatable saw cylinders, each of said rotatable saw cylinders having an exterior surface and comprising a plurality of blades, with each of the plurality of blades having a plurality of teeth thereon;
- b) a first rotatable doffing cylinder adjacent to a first of said three rotatable saw cylinders, the first rotatable doffing cylinder having a first plurality of brushes thereon operable for removing outer fibers of said plant stalks from said first saw cylinder;
- and
- c) a second rotatable doffing cylinder adjacent to both a second and a third of said three rotatable saw cylinders, the second rotatable doffing cylinder having a second plurality of brushes thereon operable for removing outer fibers of said plant stalks from said second and third saw cylinders;
- d) three fiber removal brushes, each of said three fiber removal brushes being located adjacent to a corresponding one of said three saw cylinders and being operable for separating the outer plant stalk fibers from the inner plant stalk fibers, wherein none of said three fiber removal brushes are located on either said first doffing cylinder or said second doffing cylinder;
- 2) a hammer mill operable to receive the inner plant stalk fibers from said initial separation apparatus and reduce said inner plant stalk fibers to a pre-determined size;
- and
- 3) a scrubber operable to receive the inner plant stalk fibers from the hammer mill at an input hopper at a lower end of the scrubber, the scrubber comprising a trough having an adjustable incline extending upward from the input hopper, the trough having an elongated bottom, elongated sides and an elongated open top and a mesh having diamond-shaped openings therein along a bottom surface of said trough, and a rotatable auger extending axially through said trough.
