Media authentication

A system comprising:

• one or more processors;
• a memory that stores instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
• accessing a plurality of segments of a media content item, each segment of the plurality of segments comprising embedded data in an instantaneous decode refresh (IDR) frame, the media content item indicating a content owner, and the IDR frame including a signature for frames of the media content item beginning with the IDR frame and ending with a frame immediately preceding a next IDR frame in the media content item after the IDR frame;
• based on the embedded data for each segment of the plurality of segments, determining that the signature of at least one segment of the plurality of segments indicates that the at least one segment was not signed by the indicated content owner;
• and
• based on the at least one segment not being signed by the indicated content owner, refraining from causing presentation on a display device of the at least one segment.

A method comprising:

• accessing, by one or more processors, a plurality of segments of a media content item, each segment of the plurality of segments comprising embedded data in an instantaneous decode refresh (IDR) frame, the media content item indicating a content owner, and the IDR frame including a signature for frames of the media content item beginning with the IDR frame and ending with a frame immediately preceding a next IDR frame in the media content item after the IDR frame;
• based on the embedded data for each segment of the plurality of segments, determining whether the signature indicates that the segment was signed by the indicated content owner;
• and
• causing presentation on a display device of at least one segment of the plurality of segments when the signature indicates that the at least one segment was signed by the indicated content owner.
