Abstract
A new fiber optic connector provides a smaller form factor by including two ferrule assemblies in a housing. The housing accepts a push-pull mechanism that allows for insertion and removal from a carrier as well as an adapter. The push-pull mechanism may also include a flexure member to return the push-pull mechanism. Polarity of the fiber optic connector may also be selected by use of the push-pull mechanism.
Claims19
A carrier to hold at least two fiber optic connectors, the carrier comprising:
- a main body extending between a front end and a rear end and having at least two channels extending therebetween formed by a top, a bottom and two side walls of the main body, each of the at least two channels having a height between the top and the bottom being greater than a width in a direction between the two side walls,
- wherein the top, the bottom, and the two side walls of the main body define a generally rectangular perimeter of the main body,
- wherein the at least two channels are configured to respectively receive at least two fiber-optic connectors, each of the at least two fiber optic connectors having a housing with a length along a longitudinal axis between a front end and a rear end of the housing, and a rectangular cross section orthogonal to the longitudinal axis, the main body at least partially covering the housing, and the housing having a height greater than a width to fit within the height and the width of the respective each of the at least two channels in the main body,
- wherein the housing of each of the at least two fiber-optic connectors protrudes forward of the front end of the main body of the carrier, and
- wherein the carrier is configured to insert or remove the at least two fiber optic connectors into or from, respectively, a telecommunications structure without entering the telecommunications structure.
A carrier to hold at least two fiber optic connectors, the carrier comprising:
- a main body extending between a front end and a rear end and having a top, a bottom and two side walls,
- wherein the top, the bottom, and the two side walls are positioned such that a height is numerically different from a width of the main body;
- and
- at least two channels between the front end and the rear end configured to respectively receive the at least two fiber-optic connectors, each of the at least two fiber optic connectors having a housing, a longitudinal axis along a direction between a front end and a rear end of the housing, a transverse axis extending along a direction between the two side walls, and a vertical axis extending along a direction between the top and the bottom, the main body partially covering at least a portion of the housing,
- wherein the housing for each of the at least two fiber optic connectors is smaller in a width than in a height thereof, and extends forward of the opening of the main body,
- wherein the top of the main body has a surface with a geometry different from a geometry of the bottom of the main body,
- wherein for each of the at least two channels, a height is greater than a width, and
- wherein the carrier is configured to insert or remove the at least two fiber-optic connectors into or from, respectively, an adapter or a receptacle from outside the adapter or receptacle.
A combination of a carrier and at least two fiber small form factor fiber optic connectors, comprising:
- at least two fiber optic connectors, each of the at least two fiber optic connectors comprising:
- a housing with a length along a longitudinal axis between a front end and a rear end of the housing, a width between two side walls of the housing, and a height between a top and a bottom of the housing,
- wherein the width of the housing is smaller than the height of the housing, and
- wherein each of the at least two fiber optic connectors support at least two optical fibers;
- and
- a carrier to hold the at least two fiber optic connectors, the carrier comprising:
- a main body extending between a front end and a rear end of the carrier and having a configuration formed by a top, a bottom and two side walls,
- wherein the top, the bottom, and the two side walls define a generally rectangular perimeter of the main body, and
- at least two channels within the opening to respectively receive the at least two fiber optic connectors, the main body partially covering the respective housings of the at least two fiber optic connectors and also being removably coupled to the housing of each of the at least two fiber optic connectors,
- wherein for each of the at least two channels, a height is greater than a width thereof, and
- wherein the carrier is configured to insert or remove the at least two fiber-optic connectors into or from, respectively, a telecommunications structure without entering the telecommunications structure.
