Coating for medical devices

A coating for a medical device comprising:

• a surface layer;
• and
• a base layer, wherein the base layer is biocompatible and comprises a protein;
• wherein the surface layer comprises a copolymer consisting of a polymer chain attached to a plurality of sulfonic acid groups or sulfonate groups by a linker group, wherein the polymer chain is obtainable by polymerization of monomers selected from acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, and optionally monomers selected from maleic acid and maleimide, wherein the polymer chain includes a repeating unit represented by formula (B-1):
• wherein:
• RA is selected from H and C1-6 alkyl;
• X2 is A2;
• A2 is represented by formula (S-2):
• —Z2-L2-SO2—Y2 (S-2),
• wherein:
• Z2 is selected from O, NH, and NR2;
• R2 is selected from C1-6 alkyl, C6-10 aryl, and C6-10 aryl-C1-6 alkyl;
• Y2 is selected from O− and OH;
• L2 is represented by formula (L-2):
• —P2-Q2-W2— (L-2),
• wherein:
• P2 is selected from a single bond, C1-10 alkylene, C2-10 alkenylene, C2-10 alkynylene, and phenylene;
• Q2 is selected from a single bond, O, NH, NR2C, and phenylene;
• W2 is selected from a single bond, C1-10 alkylene, C2-10 alkenylene, C2-10 alkynylene, and phenylene;
• and
• R2C is selected from C1-6 alkyl, C6-10 aryl, and C6-10 aryl-C1-6 alkyl.
