Abstract
Data spillover for storage arrays, including: entering, by a source storage array, in response to determining that an amount of used capacity for the source storage array exceeds a first threshold, a spillover mode; redirecting, in response to the source storage array being in the spillover mode, write operations directed to the source storage array to a target storage array; and exiting the spillover mode by the source storage array, wherein exiting the spillover mode comprises updating data stored on the source storage array to reflect write operations redirected to the target storage array during the spillover mode.
Claims20
A method comprising:
- entering, by a source storage array, in response to determining that an amount of used capacity for the source storage array exceeds a first threshold, a spillover mode;
- redirecting, in response to the source storage array being in the spillover mode, write operations directed to the source storage array to a target storage array, wherein redirecting the write operations comprises:
- generating, by the source storage array, an I/O record including a description of the write operations to be executed at the source storage array after the source storage array exits spillover mode;
- and
- sending the I/O record from the source storage array to the target storage array to be stored;
- and
- exiting the spillover mode by the source storage array, wherein exiting the spillover mode comprises updating data stored on the source storage array to reflect write operations redirected to the target storage array as the I/O record during the spillover mode.
An apparatus comprising a computer processor, and a computer memory operatively coupled to the computer processor, the computer processor configured to:
- enter, by a source storage array, in response to determining that an amount of used capacity for the source storage array exceeds a first threshold, a spillover mode;
- redirect, in response to the source storage array being in the spillover mode, write operations directed to the source storage array to a target storage array, wherein redirecting the write operations comprises:
- generate, by the source storage array, an I/O record including a description of the write operations to be executed at the source storage array after the source storage array exits spillover mode;
- and
- send the I/O record from the source storage array to the target storage array to be stored;
- and
- exit the spillover mode by the source storage array, wherein exiting the spillover mode comprises updating data stored on the source storage array to reflect write operations redirected to the target storage array as the I/O record during the spillover mode.
