## Abstract

Provided are a Lactobacillus plantarum strain, Lactobacillus plantarum PDG8, and a composition thereof. Also provided are methods using Lactobacillus plantarum PDG8 or a composition thereof for treating a cardiovascular disease such as atherosclerosis.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A non-naturally-occurring composition comprising an isolated Lactobacillus plantarum PDG8 strain deposited at Guangdong Microbial Culture Collection Center (GDMCC) under the accession number 62261 and an excipient, wherein the strain is present in an amount ranging from 103 to 108 CFU/mL or 105 to 1013 CFU/g of the composition.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 comprising the Lactobacillus plantarum PDG8 strain in an amount ranging from 103 to 108 CFU/mL.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is a pharmaceutical composition.

### Claim 4 (depends on 3)

The composition of claim 3, wherein the composition is formulated for oral, nasogastric, or rectal administration.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is a nutraceutical composition.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The composition of claim 5, wherein the composition is in the form of a probiotic composition, symbiotic composition, food supplement, functional food, food product, or beverage.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is a liquid.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is dried.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The composition of claim 8, wherein the composition is lyophilized or freeze-dried.

### Claim 10 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 comprising the Lactobacillus plantarum PDG8 strain in an amount sufficient to colonize the intestine of a subject when administered to the subject.

### Claim 11 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1 comprising the Lactobacillus plantarum PDG8 strain in an amount ranging from 105 to 1013 CFU/g.

### Claim 12 (depends on 1)

The composition of claim 1, wherein the composition is in unit dosage form.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The composition of claim 12, wherein the Lactobacillus plantarum PDG8 strain is present in the composition in an amount between 105 to 1013 CFU per unit dose.

### Claim 14

A method of treating atherosclerosis comprising administering orally to a mammalian subject in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising an isolated Lactobacillus plantarum PDG8 strain deposited at Guangdong Microbial Culture Collection Center (GDMCC) under the accession number 62261 and a pharmaceutically acceptable excipient.

### Claim 15 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14 comprising administering the therapeutically effective amount in multiple doses.

### Claim 16 (depends on 15)

The method of claim 15 comprising administering the therapeutically effective amount daily for at least a week.

### Claim 17 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14 comprising administering the therapeutically effective amount until the intestine of the subject is detectably colonized with the Lactobacillus plantarum PDG8 strain.

### Claim 18 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, wherein the therapeutically effective amount is in a range of 105 to 1013 CFU per day.

### Claim 19 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, wherein the number or the areas of atherosclerotic plaques in the subject are reduced compared to a corresponding subject not fed with the composition.

### Claim 20 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, wherein the expression level of a pro-inflammatory factor in the serum of the subject is reduced compared to a corresponding subject not fed with the composition, wherein the pro-inflammatory factor is IL-6 or TNF-alpha.

### Claim 21 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, wherein the level of total cholesterol, triglyceride, or low-density cholesterol in the serum of the subject is reduced compared to a corresponding subject not fed with the composition.

### Claim 22 (depends on 14)

The method of claim 14, wherein the amount of abdominal fat of the subject is reduced compared to a corresponding subject not fed with the composition.
