Abstract
An oral appliance for treating sleep apnea in a user includes a mouthpiece configured for being positioned in an oral cavity of the user, and at least one pulse oximeter attached to the mouthpiece. According to an aspect, the pulse oximeter is configured to monitor actual oxygen saturation levels of hemoglobin of the user when the oral appliance is positioned in the oral cavity of the user. The oral appliance may include an additional sensor attached to the mouthpiece that includes at least one of an airflow sensor, a pressure sensor, a noise detector, and an actigraphy sensor.
Claims20
An oral appliance, comprising:
- a mouthpiece configured to be positioned on an upper dentition in an oral cavity of a user, the mouthpiece having a buccal wall and a lingual wall;
- a gum portion extending upwardly from at least a portion of the buccal wall of the mouthpiece, the gum portion including a left side and a right side, and the gum portion configured to be positioned along an upper gum of the user;
- an oxygen sensor coupled to the mouthpiece and configured to determine an oxygen level of the user;
- a first electroencephalogram (EEG) electrode coupled to the left side of the gum portion;
- a second EEG electrode coupled to the left side of the gum portion, wherein the first EEG electrode is spaced apart from and located anteriorly of the second EEG electrode;
- a third EEG electrode coupled to the right side of the gum portion;
- a fourth EEG electrode coupled to the right side of the gum portion, wherein the third EEG electrode is spaced apart from and located anteriorly of the fourth EEG electrode;
- and
- a microprocessor electrically coupled to the first, second, third, and fourth EEG electrodes, the microprocessor configured to:
- detect brain wave signals through the oral cavity of the user based on voltage differences measured between a first pair of EEG electrodes and voltage differences measured between a second pair of EEG electrodes, wherein the first pair of EEG electrodes includes the first and second EEG electrodes and the second pair of EEG electrodes includes the third and fourth EEG electrodes,
- identify an EEG rhythm based on the brain wave signals detected through the oral cavity of the user, and
- determine a state of the user based on the EEG rhythm.
A system, comprising:
- a mouthpiece configured to be positioned on an upper dentition in an oral cavity of a user, the mouthpiece having a buccal wall, a lingual wall, and a gum portion, the gum portion extending upwardly from at least a portion of the buccal wall of the mouthpiece, and the gum portion including a left side and a right side, and the gum portion configured to be positioned along an upper gum of the user;
- a first electroencephalogram (EEG) electrode positioned on the left side of the gum portion;
- a second EEG electrode positioned on the left side of the gum portion, wherein the first EEG electrode is spaced apart from and located anteriorly of the second EEG electrode;
- a third EEG electrode positioned on the right side of the gum portion;
- a fourth EEG electrode positioned on the right side of the gum portion, wherein the third EEG electrode is spaced apart from and located anteriorly of the fourth EEG electrode;
- and
- a microprocessor communicatively coupled to the first, second, third, and fourth EEG electrodes, the microprocessor configured to:
- detect brain wave signals through the oral cavity of the user based on voltage differences measured between a first pair of EEG electrodes comprising the first and third EEG electrodes and voltage differences measured between a second pair of EEG electrodes comprising the second and fourth EEG electrodes,
- identify an EEG rhythm based on the brain wave signals detected through the oral cavity of the user, and
- determine a state of the user based on the EEG rhythm.
An oral appliance, comprising:
- a mouthpiece configured to be positioned on an upper dentition in an oral cavity of a user, the mouthpiece having a buccal wall and a lingual wall;
- a gum portion extending upwardly from the buccal wall of the mouthpiece, the gum portion including a first side and a second side, and the gum portion configured to be positioned along an upper gum of the user;
- a first electroencephalogram (EEG) electrode coupled to the first side of the gum portion;
- a second EEG electrode coupled to the first side of the gum portion, wherein the first EEG electrode is positioned anteriorly of the second EEG electrode;
- a third EEG electrode coupled to the second side of the gum portion;
- and
- a fourth EEG electrode coupled to the second side of the gum portion, wherein the third EEG electrode is positioned anteriorly of the fourth EEG electrode,
- wherein the first, second, third, and fourth EEG electrodes are communicatively coupled to a microprocessor, the microprocessor configured to:
- detect brain wave signals through the oral cavity of the user based on voltage differences measured between at least two pairs of the first, second, third, and fourth EEG electrodes,
- identify an EEG rhythm based on the brain wave signals detected through the oral cavity of the user, and determine a state of the user based on the EEG rhythm.
