Self-testing detector

A detector device comprising:

• a housing and a cover together defining a chamber and collectively including an inlet to allow ambient air to enter into the chamber;
• a light source configured to emit light;
• a sensor configured to detect light within the chamber;
• a resistor configured to emit one or more substances when exposed to an electrical current traveling therethrough during a test cycle of the detector device;
• and
• a speaker configured to emit an audible alarm when the light sensed by the sensor passes a threshold.

A detector device comprising:

• a housing and a cover together defining a chamber and collectively including an inlet to allow ambient air to enter into the chamber;
• a light source configured to emit light;
• a sensor configured to detect light within the chamber;
• a substance emitter configured to emit one or more substances during a test cycle of the detector device;
• a speaker configured to emit an audible alarm when the light sensed by the sensor passes a threshold;
• and
• a feedback device configured to provide a user with feedback to indicate that the test cycle was successful,
• wherein, the feedback device determines that the test cycle was successful based, at least in part, on a second sensor configured to detect vibrations from the audible alarm.
