Abstract
The subject matter of the present disclosure generally relates to techniques for neuromodulation of a tissue (e.g., an organ) that include applying energy (e.g., ultrasound energy) into the tissue to cause altered activity at a synapse between a neuron and a non-neuronal cell. In one embodiment, the energy is applied to cause competing or opposing effects for bi-directional control of physiological processes.
Claims14
A modulation system comprising:
- a non-invasive ultrasound probe, configured to emit one or more imaging beams and one or more therapy beams using the same or different transducers;
- and
- a controller configured to:
- direct the non-invasive ultrasound probe on a first region of interest of a first tissue comprising a liver or sub-region of the liver;
- adjustably control the non-invasive ultrasound probe to apply a first energy dose to the liver or the sub-region of the liver, wherein applying the first energy dose to the liver or the sub-region of the liver decreases circulating glucose concentration;
- direct the non-invasive ultrasound probe or a different non-invasive ultrasound probe on a second region of interest comprising a gastrointestinal tissue;
- and
- adjustably control the non-invasive ultrasound probe or the different non-invasive ultrasound probe to apply a second energy dose to the gastrointestinal tissue, wherein applying the second energy dose to the gastrointestinal tissue decreases circulating insulin concentration.

A method of changing insulin sensitivity of a subject, comprising:
- applying a first ultrasound therapy beam to a liver or sub-region of the liver to stimulate a first insulin sensitivity regulating molecular pathway distal from the liver, wherein the first ultrasound therapy beam to the liver or the sub-region of the liver decreases circulating glucose concentration;
- and
- applying a second ultrasound therapy beam to a gastrointestinal tissue to stimulate a second insulin sensitivity regulating molecular pathway, wherein the second ultrasound therapy beam to the gastrointestinal tissue decreases circulating insulin concentration.
A modulation system comprising:
- a non-invasive ultrasound probe, configured to emit one or more imaging beams and one or more therapy beams using the same or different transducers;
- and
- a controller configured to:
- using an imaging mode of the non-invasive ultrasound probe, direct the non-invasive ultrasound probe toward a porta hepatis of a subject;
- using a treatment mode of the non-invasive ultrasound probe, adjustably control the non-invasive ultrasound probe to apply a first therapy beam to the porta hepatis;
- using the imaging mode of the non-invasive ultrasound probe or a different non-invasive ultrasound probe, direct the non-invasive ultrasound probe or the different non-invasive ultrasound probe toward a gastrointestinal tissue of the subject;
- using the treatment mode of the non-invasive ultrasound probe or the different non-invasive ultrasound probe, adjustably control the non-invasive ultrasound probe or the different non-invasive ultrasound probe to apply a second therapy beam to the gastrointestinal tissue, wherein the second therapy beam to the gastrointestinal tissue decreases circulating insulin concentration;
- and
- receive an input indicative of at least a circulating glucose concentration.
