Abstract
Apparatus, systems, and methods are provided for localizing lesions within a patient's body, e.g., within a breast. The system may include one or more markers implantable within or around the target tissue region, and a probe for transmitting and receiving electromagnetic signals to detect the one or more markers. During use, the marker(s) are into a target tissue region, and the probe is placed against the patient's skin to detect and localize the marker(s). A tissue specimen, including the lesion and the marker(s), is then removed from the target tissue region based at least in part on the localization information from the probe.
Claims18
A system for localization of a target tissue region within a patient's body, the system comprising:
- a probe comprising one or more antennas for transmitting electromagnetic signals into the patient's body and receiving reflected signals from the patient's body;
- a plurality of markers sized and configured for implantation in a region surrounding the target tissue, wherein each marker of the plurality of markers is configured to provide enhancements to the reflected signals in a unique manner relative to other markers of the plurality of markers,
- wherein each of the plurality of markers includes a surface finish that includes a plurality of pores or dimples having a desired diameter and depth that is distinct relative to other markers, wherein the pores or dimples of the surface finish introduces a distinguishing attribute in the reflected signals that is unique relative to the other markers;
- and
- a processor to process the reflected signals to:
- identify and distinguish the reflected signals of the plurality of markers from each other based on the enhancements to the reflected signals, wherein each identified reflected signal corresponds to one of the plurality of markers, and
- determine distances to each of the plurality of markers based on the identified and distinguished reflected signals.
A system for localization of a target tissue region within a patient's body, the system comprising:
- a probe comprising one or more antennas for transmitting electromagnetic signals into the patient's body and receiving reflected signals from the patient's body;
- a plurality of markers sized and configured for implantation, wherein the plurality of markers are configured to provide enhanced reflected signals that are different than each other,
- wherein each of the plurality of markers includes a surface finish that includes a plurality of pores or dimples having a desired diameter and depth that is distinct relative to other markers, wherein the pores or dimples of the surface finish introduces a distinguishing attribute in the reflected signals that is unique relative to the other markers;
- and
- a controller comprising:
- an impulse generator to control the electromagnetic signals transmitted by the probe;
- an impulse receiver to receive the reflected signals from the probe;
- a processor identify and distinguish the enhanced reflected signals of each of the plurality of markers from each other;
- a display configured to show distances to each of the plurality of markers based on the enhanced reflected signals.
