Abstract
Aspects of the subject disclosure may include, for example, a broadband modem that includes a wireless modem and a wireline modem. A traffic integrate and split unit (TISU) within the broadband modem may split uplink data between the wireless and wireline connection based on a scheduling criteria. The TISU may also integrate or combine downlink data received by the wireless and wireline modems. Other embodiments are disclosed.

A device, comprising:
- a cable modem having a first internet protocol address;
- a cellular modem having a second internet protocol address, wherein the second internet protocol address is different from the first internet protocol address, wherein the cellular modem is configured for communication with a base station of a radio access network of a cellular network, the cellular modem operating in conjunction with an electronic SIM card to provide a secure and flexible communications configuration with the cellular network;
- a user equipment (UE) connection apparatus;
- a processing system including a processor coupled to the cable modem, the cellular modem, and the UE connection apparatus;
- and
- a memory that stores executable instructions that, when executed by the processing system, facilitate performance of operations, the operations comprising:
- receiving first data from the UE connection apparatus, wherein the first data is provided by a UE communicatively coupled to the UE connection apparatus;
- receiving, from a network traffic management unit, a scheduling criteria, the scheduling criteria being generated by the network traffic management unit based on real-time measurements of at least one of latency, bandwidth, throughput, buffer conditions, or traffic priority by the network traffic management unit of a first network connection between the network traffic management unit and the cable modem and of a second network connection between the network traffic management unit and the cellular modem;
- splitting the first data into second data to be sent to the cable modem and third data to be sent to the cellular modem, wherein the splitting the first data is responsive to the scheduling criteria including the real-time measurements of at least one of latency, bandwidth, throughput, buffer conditions, or traffic priority of the first network connection and the second network connection, wherein the splitting comprises creating corresponding streams separated per modem type tied to distinct IP addresses and scheduling metrics of the scheduling criteria;
- and
- sending the second data to the cable modem as a default selection, wherein the sending the second data is according to the scheduling criteria and according to the first internet protocol address, and sending the third data to the cellular modem, wherein the sending the third data to the cellular modem is according to the second internet protocol address and according to the scheduling criteria, wherein the sending the second data to the cable modem is a default unless the scheduling criteria dynamically indicates increased efficiency for data sent through the cellular modem.
A non-transitory, machine-readable medium, comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processing system including a processor, facilitate performance of operations, the operations comprising:
- receiving first data from a UE connection apparatus, wherein the first data is provided by a UE communicatively coupled to the UE connection apparatus;
- receiving, from a network traffic management unit, a scheduling criteria, the scheduling criteria being generated by the network traffic management unit based on real-time measurements by the network traffic management unit of at least one of latency, bandwidth, throughput, buffer conditions, or traffic priority of a first network connection between the network traffic management unit and a cable modem and of a second network connection between the network traffic management unit and a cellular modem;
- splitting the first data into second data to be sent to the cable modem and third data to be sent to the cellular modem, wherein the splitting the first data is responsive to the scheduling criteria including the real-time measurements of the at least one of latency, bandwidth, throughput, buffer conditions, or traffic priority, wherein the splitting comprises creating corresponding data streams for the second data and the third data, each corresponding data stream tied to a distinct internet protocol address;
- sending the second data to the cable modem according to the scheduling criteria, wherein the sending the second data is according to a first internet protocol address associated with the cable modem;
- and
- sending at least a portion of the third data to the cellular modem according to the scheduling criteria and according to a second internet protocol address associated with the cellular modem, wherein the second internet protocol address is different from the first internet protocol address, wherein the second data is sent to the cable modem as a default unless the scheduling criteria indicates increased efficiency for data sent to the cellular modem.
A method, comprising:
- receiving, by a processing system including a processor, first data from a UE connection apparatus, wherein the first data is provided by a UE communicatively coupled to the UE connection apparatus;
- receiving, from a network traffic management unit, a scheduling criteria, the scheduling criteria being generated by the network traffic management unit based on real-time measurements by the network traffic management unit of at least one of latency, bandwidth, throughput, buffer conditions, or traffic priority of a first network connection between the network traffic management unit and a cable modem associated with the UE connection apparatus and of a second network connection between the network traffic management unit and a cellular modem associated with the UE connection apparatus;
- splitting, by the processing system, the first data into second data to be sent to a cable modem and third data to be sent to a cellular modem, wherein the splitting is responsive to the scheduling criteria including the at least one of latency, bandwidth, throughput, buffer conditions, or traffic priority, wherein the splitting comprises creating corresponding streams separated per modem type tied to distinct IP addresses and scheduling metrics of the scheduling criteria;
- sending, by the processing system, the second data to the cable modem, according to the scheduling criteria, the second data for transmission by the cable modem to a remote cable modem termination system according to a first internet protocol address associated with the cable modem;
- and
- sending, by the processing system, at least a portion of the third data to the cellular modem, the third data for transmission by the cellular modem to a base station of a radio access network of a cellular network according to a second internet protocol address associated with the cellular modem, wherein the second internet protocol address is different from the first internet protocol address, wherein the sending the third data to the cellular modem is according to the scheduling criteria, and wherein the second data is sent to the cable modem as a default unless the scheduling criteria indicates increased efficiency for data sent to the cellular modem.
