Abstract
A converged broadband access service controller (CBASC) provides for energy efficiency monitoring in a 5G fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) network including wireless and wireline convergence (WWC). The CBASC receives energy efficiency metrics via APIs with an SMO, a PCMS, a DCMS, and an ACMS; determines composite 5G broadband access network energy consumption based on the energy efficiency metrics; and in response to the composite 5G broadband access network energy consumption exceeding an energy efficiency threshold for instantiating an edge user plane component, trigger a CCSO to launch the edge user plane component.
Claims21
A method, performed by a converged broadband access service controller (CBASC), of energy efficiency monitoring fifth generation (5G) fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) network including wireless and wireline convergence (WWC), the method comprising:
- receiving energy efficiency metrics application programming interfaces (APIs) with a service management and orchestration (SMO), a passive optical network (PON) control and management system (PCMS), a data over cable service interface specification/hybrid fiber-coaxial (DOCSIS/HFC) control and management system (DCMS), and an access gateway function (AGF) control and management system (ACMS);
- determining composite 5G broadband access network energy consumption based on the energy efficiency metrics;
- and
- in response to the composite 5G broadband access network energy consumption exceeding an energy efficiency threshold for instantiating an edge user plane component, the edge user plane component including one or both a user plane function (UPF) and an edge AGF-user plane (AGF-UP), triggering a converged core service controller (CCSC) to instantiate the edge user plane component.
A system for energy efficiency monitoring in a fifth generation (5G) fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) network including wireless and wireline convergence (WWC), the system comprising:
- one or more processors communicatively coupled to one or more data storage devices including computer-readable instructions stored thereon, the computer-readable instructions configured to instruct the one or more processors to implement:
- a set of energy efficiency monitoring units (EEMUs), including a first EEMU in an open radio access network (O-RAN), a second EEMU in an optical line termination (OLT), a third EEMU in a cable modem termination system (CMTS), and a fourth EEMU in an access gateway function (AGF), in which the first EEMU is configured to provide O-RAN energy efficiency metrics to a service management and orchestration (SMO) via a first energy efficiency application programming interface (EE API), the second EEMU is configured to provide passive optical network (PON) energy efficiency metrics to a PON control and management system (PCMS) via a second EE API, the third EEMU is configured to provide HFC energy efficiency metrics to a data over cable service interface specification/hybrid fiber-coaxial (DOCSIS/HFC) control and management system (DCMS) via a third EE API, and the fourth EEMU is configured to provide access gateway function (AGF) energy efficiency metrics to an AGF control and management system (ACMS) via a fourth EE API;
- and
- a converged broadband access service controller (CBASC) configured to receive the energy efficiency metrics via application programming interfaces (APIs) with the SMO, the PCMS, the DCMS, and the ACMS, determine composite 5G broadband access network energy consumption based on the energy efficiency metrics, and in response to the composite 5G broadband access network energy consumption exceeding an energy efficiency threshold for instantiating an edge user plane component, the edge user plane component including one or both a user plane function (UPF) and an edge AGF user plane (AGF-UP), trigger a converged core service controller (CCSC) to instantiate the edge user plane component.
