Abstract
Methods and apparatuses for improving telecommunications services using virtualized network functions are described. The virtualized network functions may be deployed across different data centers of a data center hierarchy that electrically connect one or more user devices with one or more data networks. A set of virtualized network functions may be assigned to computing resources within a particular data center based on latency requirements, power requirements, and/or quality of service requirements for one or more network slices supported by the set of virtualized network functions. The set of virtualized networks functions may include a set of shared core network functions that are shared by two or more network slices.
Claims16
A system, comprising:
- one or more processors configured to:
- acquire a set of quality of service parameters associated with a network connection to user equipment;
- identify a set of network functions for establishing the network connection;
- determine a data center location for running the set of network functions based on the set of quality of service parameters;
- detect that the set of network functions is deployable using a containerized environment within the data center location;
- deploy the set of network functions within the containerized environment to establish the network connection in response to detection that the set of network functions are deployable using the containerized environment;
- acquire an updated set of quality of service parameters associated with the network connection;
- detect that the set of network functions is to be run using a virtual machine within the data center location based on the updated set of quality of service parameters;
- and
- move execution of the set of network functions from the containerized environment to the virtual machine in response to detection that the set of network functions is to be run using the virtual machine.
A method, comprising:
- acquiring a set of quality of service parameters associated with a network connection to user equipment;
- identifying a set of network functions for establishing the network connection;
- determining a data center location for running the set of network functions based on the set of quality of service parameters;
- detecting that the set of network functions are deployable using a containerized environment within the data center location;
- deploying the set of network functions within the containerized environment to establish the network connection in response to detection that the set of network functions are deployable using the containerized environment;
- acquiring an updated set of quality of service parameters associated with the network connection;
- detecting that the set of network functions should be run using a hardware server within the data center location based on the updated set of quality of service parameters;
- and
- transferring the set of network functions from the containerized environment to the hardware server.
A computing device, comprising:
- one or more processors configured to:
- identify a set of network functions to be deployed within a containerized environment;
- identify a data center location for the containerized environment based on a power requirement for the set of network functions at the data center location;
- deploy the set of network functions within the data center location using the containerized environment;
- acquire a set of quality of service parameters associated with the network connection after deployment of the set of network functions within the data center location using the containerized environment;
- detect that the set of network functions is to be run using a virtual machine within the data center location based on the updated set of quality of service parameters;
- and
- move execution of the set of network functions from the containerized environment to a virtual machine or a hardware server based on the acquired set of quality of service parameters.
