Dynamically scaling application and storage system functions based on a heterogeneous resource pool available for use by a distributed storage system

A method performed by one or more processing resources of a cluster including a plurality of nodes and collectively representing a distributed storage system, the method comprising:

• detecting availability of a new node for addition to the cluster from a heterogeneous resource pool, wherein nodes within the heterogeneous resource pool have varying resource capacities in terms of one or more of storage resource capacities, compute resource capacities, and memory capacities;
• evaluating a resource capacity of the new node with reference to a threshold storage capacity and a threshold compute capacity;
• based on said evaluating, dynamically establishing a configuration of the new node, wherein the configuration is indicative of whether one or both of (i) block and storage management services and (ii) file and volume services are to be provisioned on the new node;
• and
• deploying, virtually, the new node within the cluster in accordance with the configuration, by enabling one or both of an instance of a storage management subsystem (SMS), implementing the block and storage management services, and an instance of a data management subsystem (DMS), implementing the file and volume services, within the new node, wherein the SMS and the DMS are disaggregated from each other allowing either or both the instance of the SMS or the instance of the DMS to operate independently within the new node.

A distributed storage system comprising:

• a cluster of a plurality of nodes including one or more processing resources;
• and
• instructions, which when executed by the one or more processing resources cause the distributed storage system to:
• detect availability of a new node for addition to the cluster from a heterogeneous resource pool, wherein nodes within the heterogeneous resource pool have varying resource capacities in terms of one or more of storage resource capacities, compute resource capacities, and memory capacities;
• evaluate a resource capacity of the new node with reference to a threshold storage capacity and a threshold compute capacity;
• based on evaluation of the resource capacity, dynamically establish a configuration of the new node, wherein the configuration is indicative of whether one or both of (i) block and storage management services and (ii) file and volume services are to be provisioned on the new node;
• and
• deploy, virtually, the new node within the cluster in accordance with the configuration, by enabling one or both of an instance of a storage management subsystem (SMS), implementing the block and storage management services, and an instance of a data management subsystem (DMS), implementing the file and volume services, within the new node, wherein the SMS and the DMS are disaggregated from each other allowing either or both the instance of the SMS or the instance of the DMS to operate independently within the new node.
