Location-based maintenance operations for a data storage device

A data storage device, comprising:

• a controller;
• and
• a maintenance system associated with the controller and operable to:
• perform a first maintenance operation on a first portion of the data storage device at a first frequency;
• perform a second maintenance operation on a second portion of the data storage device at a second frequency;
• determine whether the first portion of the data storage device is susceptible to a first failure;
• determine whether the second portion of the data storage device is susceptible to a second failure;
• perform the first maintenance operation on first data associated with the first portion at a first updated frequency based, at least in part, on determining the first portion of the data storage device is susceptible to the first failure, wherein the first updated frequency is different from the first frequency and wherein the first maintenance operation includes correcting errors in the first data and rewriting the first data to a first physical memory block;
• and
• perform the second maintenance operation on second data associated with the second portion at a second updated frequency based, at least in part, on determining the second portion of the data storage device is susceptible to the second failure, wherein the second updated frequency is different from the second frequency and wherein the second maintenance operation includes correcting errors in the second data and rewriting the second data to a second physical memory block.

A data storage device, comprising:

• means for determining whether one or more portions of a data storage device are susceptible to one or more failures, the one or more portions of the data storage device being associated with a hierarchy;
• means for determining a bit error rate of data associated with each of the one or more portions of the data storage device that are determined as being susceptible to the one or more failures;
• means for comparing the bit error rate of the data associated with each of the one or more portions of the data storage device that are determined as being susceptible to the one or more failures to a bit error rate threshold;
• means for determining a current frequency of a maintenance operation associated with the one or more portions of the data storage device that are determined as being susceptible to the one or more failures;
• means for determining an updated frequency of the maintenance operation, wherein the means for determining the updated frequency of the maintenance operation determines the updated frequency of the maintenance operation based, at least in part on one or more of the bit error rate of the data associated with each of the one or more portions of the data storage device exceeding the bit error rate threshold and on one or more characteristics associated with the one or more portions of the data storage device;
• and
• means for performing the maintenance operation on the one or more portions of the data storage device at the updated frequency, the maintenance operation including correcting errors in the data associated with the one or more portions of the data storage device and rewriting the data to other physical memory blocks.
